Discovery Value?
« on: 11 May 2008, 15:37:29 »

Afternoon all,

As you know I'm sorting out an Omega which when done I intended primarily to use for my long haul trips this year (lakes, trip to northern isles/scotland with Maria, cornwall) etc.. that would be impossible to afford in the Discovery at 15mpg.

Whilst I love the Disco, it has crossed my mind that I can't drive two cars at once, and the money it could potentially release would be a huge help to buy an LPG kit and fund the trips with the change.

So, while I love it to bits, I am toying with the possibility of letting go - especially if the rumours of £1.50/litre this summer are true!

Please note, this isn't an Ad - and it's not yet for sale - I'm just after opinions.

The spec is as follows:

1995 Discovery 3.9 V8 Automatic (Private "XIL" reg included)
Full MOT
Tax end 06/08
7 seats

Absolutely no structural rust and no signs of any repairs, bar a cosmetic repair on the NSF inner wing (MOT station said it wasn't relevent to the test and it was one of the most sound they've seen). Boot floor, and inner wings and wheelarches have been hammerited.

Very smooth gearchange and good autobox.
Tyres are all very new.
Generally in tidy condition, with the odd imperfection. Small hammerite stain on rear bench  ::)
Wheel bearing done, windscreen replaced.
Coolant loss FIXED (It was just a hose  :-[ )
Will come with new water pump, existing one noisy!
Compression test shows 10.5 bar in each cyl.
Brake materials all nearly new.

Faults?

Nothing significant. Idle seems a bit low, I've always thought this but a land rover fan tells me it's fine. It never cuts out or stalls and doesn't fluctuate - just seems a bit low.

Very small amount of oil comsumption, maybe 0.5 litre per 1000 miles most. Again, believe it's normal behavior.
Cruise doesn't work, believe it's because vacc pipes for it are wrong.
Spare wheel fitted due to damaged tyre, but alloy supplied.

Oh - and the transfer box has a bit of a whine, but always been like it and not got any worse.

So, any ideas what it's worth with an honest description?

I paid £1200 with hardly any MOT - rekon I could break even?  ::)

You would just break even. £1,200 is about the right money it seams.

But they are mostly the 200 older shape - mine is the 300..  ::)

Does that mean it weighs 300 tones instead of 200?  ;)  ;D

The "faults" you've listed are standard equipment with a Rover V8, particularly when coupled with a Land Rover product!!  ;D ;D

You should definitely break even... Might even make a small profit if you're lucky. I'd advise advertising it in the back of something like Land Rover Owner or some other specialist magazine prior to sticking it in Autotrader/Ebay as that's where you're more likely to get proper buyers and money!!

Good luck if you decide to sell!

I know... aside of the nsf inner wing repair (which MOT said is cosmetic only) then it's as solid as a rock! ;D

£1200 ish sounds about right but you don't give the mileage. I honestly think the Discos were the car that should've done better were it not for BL or Rover building them, as in the Rover SD1. Should've been a cracking motor but the build quality (or lack of it) let them down badly which is a crying shame.
Full marks for design & potential though. :-/

With that viscous solid coupled fan you might be able to make a wind tunnel out of it.

;D

Thanks for the opinions, confims what I thought. I would settle for £1200 if it was an easy sale.

Lets see what the Miggy repair brings, then it might get listed ;D

Suppose you've weighed up the option of a LPG conversion for the LR v the Omega option.
Is that 15mpg you quote running solo or do you tow a caravan?
