only problem I have had with system restore (quite often) is that either there is no restore for the date you need or the restore operation fails.  It has never caused corruption.  It is widely thought of as the first resort, which was what it was designed for.

If you had built and repaired as many pcs as me you wouldn't rely on system restore - it often causes system corruption, believe me. You may well have been lucky, but any IT professional will tell you it is flaky, unless it was Bill Gates of course.

Not to be recommended as first option on a "repair", rather a last resort.  The OPs problem would be best approached by removing mobo usb drivers and reinstalling in first instance, as recommended by myself and others ;)

As an IT expert (so they say), I would also suggest that 'System Restore' is as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Terbert;  Anyone with any knowledge of Windoze would have given you the correct way forward.  So far, all I've seen is pish.

Check online and find out which driver your phone uses (probably common drivers from Nokia) and delete them from your system.  Search for them and get rid.

Then reboot and re-install your Nokia Software (if you use it).  If you dont use any of the features of the Nokia software, don't bother using it.  Just allow Windows to see your phone as a removable storage device.

Note: When you removed the Nokia software, it wouldn't have completely removed everything.  Windows is good at being shit.

Thanks for the replies......

I am working through all the 'tips' you have given me, not finished yet, but so far, still the same result :(

However, I shall continue, and when fixed, will let you know which of your recommendations worked :y :y
Appreciated :y

(Broomies mate).... I did not use the Nokia software (PC Suite) originally......thought it rather good how windows just picked my phone up. I put it in yesterday, but no joy. Went to device manager at the start, and had the yellow icon :(

Lastly, fellas....don't quarrel about it....its only a phone ;) :y

Please dont bother re installing your M/B USB drivers - It's proven your USB ports are working as they should.  It's just Windows now doesn't recognise your phone anymore.  That is likely to be because of a conflict.

You could use msconfig to disable anything 'Nokia' related on boot (I bet Nokia software is loading on boot) and It'll be just dandy!

Why is it you're the only guy that doesn't talk crap, when all about you, not just me, disagree with you?  30+ years in IT - you haven't learnt much have you?

As I said earlier, m/b is old and no support drivers for Windows 7. I think there are Vista drivers on their site. Which brings me to a question....I originally had XP Pro on this board, then wiped and installed Windows 7 64 bit. I must have put the original CD in to get the Ethernet to work.....I assume it must have put usb drivers in too....or is that a windows thing.
Sorry for ignorance :-[

If you installed Win7 from scratch, likely it installed generic drivers for USB, and ethernet too (assuming ethernet working ok) ;)

You are probably right, dbug. Ethernet works perfect. Can't say I remember putting in the CD, just assumed I did.

In fairness to Windoze7, contains a lot of drivers working well with older hardware.  Glad its working for you.

You are slating your Hardware Terbert, but cant see your M/B being that old if it is running a 64Bit processor!  :y
