Exhaust question
« on: 14 April 2013, 08:56:32 »

Hi everybody the desmond tutu is still going, after spending quite a bit of money on it. Have ordered a replacement sections all the way though including rear backbox from ets.Where it joins in the mid section does not have a gasket linked to it, is this right.Should it have a gasket on it although i think its got a rolled lip on it.Also what size are the two bolts that join it. Any tips for putting it together it will be on ramps at back. Many thanks  :y

From memory - I've never owned a Desmond Omega - no gaskets anywhere (except each side of exhaust manifold).

Quite straightforward, but get the bolts soaking in penetrating fluid now, so hopefully they will come out without shearing (which involves drilling and retapping if it does).

A bit of exhaust paste needed on the mid to rear section(s), and also on the mid to mid section if its a proper 2.2 exhaust.

Changed exhaust on a 2 litre today. I have a MAPP gas torch which I used to heat the cat section to mid section screws to red heat; then I allowed to cool, sprayed with oil, and carefully unscrewed the screws. This gets them out intact; the nuts are 8mm I think, 13mm heads, 20mm long stainless steel. I use Loctite 5920 high temperature silicone from Halfords to seal the joint, and apply Copper Ease to the screws to facilitate removal next time.

If the screws do break off - very boring - I drill them out and use a nut and bolt to reassemble, like the Senators were from new.
