Cant open bonnet
« on: 16 April 2013, 14:43:57 »

Hi

I had the bonnet on my 2.2 2003 omega open as I was adjusting the headlights in the dark. When I closed the bonnet, it initially didnt close, so I tried again and it closed ok... Now it wont open...  The cable seems ok from the inside handle, and im thinking that maybe I left the plastic shield that gives access to the headlight from near the slam panel lying near the bonnet catch...

So... does anyone have any photos  of the bonnet catch mechanism so I can figure out a way to pop  the bonnet, hopefully thru the grill somehow...

I looked thru the grill, and saw the hook (that comes from above, with the open end pointing away from you, and i got a wire coat hangar over it and pulled it towards me, but that didnt do anything , other than that I could see the metal rod from the release catch on the left hand side of the grill center move as I pulled it...

Hard to explain unless you are looking at it...

Thanks

Adi...

is their resistance when pulling cable back? Get a mate to push down on the nose of the bonnet, while you try and pull the release lever.  :y

Hi

There is resistance when you pull the lever, but when you push down on the bonnet, there is no bounce or play...

I'm thinking I might have spiked the plastic headlamp access cover that I might have left on the slam panel, but I'm not sure...

I really don't want to trash the grill...

I cant picture the catch or release mechanism tho...Thats why I wanted some pics so I can work out how to pop it

Hi

Is there no pokey pokey with a thin metal bar through the grill on some part of the locking mechanism, instead of smashy smashy on the grill ?

Sadly no, you have to reach the spring clip which is just doable by hand once with the grill parts removed, or as Robs posted you can make that tool.

On the upside a replacement grill here, should be very cheap, £10 maybe?  :y

if there's any pressure upwards on the bonnet eg you left something under there or you have a non spec battery (too tall), then the bonnet won't release.  As tunnie says you need to pull the lever tight while at the same time (someone else)  press down gently on the bonnet front above the catch.

I closed my bonnet onto a screwdriver and could then not open bonnet Did the push down whilst pulling release and it popped open. Push down hard  near the locking catch

I have had the same problem yesterday and today. I gave up yesterday as I was getting a bit pissed off. Out there tonight and finally got it open. Just patience and a willing helper, (wife or similar), to pull your lever so to speak, with pressure on all parts of the bonnet until you find "that" spot. Took about 15 minutes but got there in the end. My mistake was adjusting the rubber stops and the pin so there was no play. I imagine much the same as getting something stuck under there?
Have a go, just for a bit. seems like an impossible job until you hear the click... :y

Thanks guys

One large brother in law sat on the front of the bonnet and one pull of the lever and it opened...

I had left the headlight access cover on the slam panel...
