2.5 td facelift buying advice / help
« on: 21 April 2013, 11:51:59 »

Hi guys.

First off, I apologize if I'm posting this in a wrong section.
Yesterday, I went to see a 2001 2.5td omega estate.
I really liked the car, but it has some issues I wanted to ask here.
First off, when I pulled out the oil rod, everything was ok, no blowing or oil steams coming out.
But when it lifted the oil cap on the top of the engine, the car changed sound and there was some oil coming out in drops. Is this normal??  :o
Secondly...
When I started the car cold, it had some troubles starting. Felt like I had to crank each cylinder separately :)
Also, my friend noticed some tiny metal sound coming out of the engine.
There was no smoke coming out of the exhaust. Once started, it was working fine. There was about 1/3rd of the tank of fuel in it.
Later on, when starting warm, it made about 2-3, maybe 4 turns of cranking and started normally.
While driving, I didn't notice any smoke coming out of the exhaust, although, the very end of the exhaust pipe is coloured black.
Also, if I remember corretly, the idle speed was about 1k rpm, little above the regular 750-800 rpm.
What do the experts make of this?

Driveability is great, the suspension seems great.
Is there anything else I should check when going to see the car again?

Thanks for your help, these are the main factors in deciding whether to buy the car or not.

If the engine is running then I would expect Oil to pop out the filler hole.

Starting, did allow the Glow Plugs to warm up before starting and again on restarts?

Black rear exhaust pipe normal.

i have a 2.5td if they are warm they take a few more turns for it to start so i wouldn't worry about that also remember there a big 6 cylinder engine so takes a fair bit to get them started. if you didn't let the car heat when it was cold (i.e the engine heat light to turn off in the dash before starting the car) it will get it hard to start as its diesel! the diesel omega don't actually give out much smoke at all unless you drop the car down a gear to get power. i wouldn't worry about the black on the exhaust its diesel it happens and will be all over your boot soon!!! that idling speed is right mine is the same. the way of knowing if the car is idling too low, the car engine will be under pressure and start chucking while idling.
i would check the sump to make sure it hasn't been re welded especially around the sump plug as the  sump is very low.
if its an automatic id be cautious about buying it as the auto box isn't as good as the manual and give a bit of trouble i think
wouldn't worry about mileage cause they go for ever mine has 225000 miles and still running perfect and know they can get 350,000
good luck  :y
