Door Stay - is it safe to weld
« on: 01 May 2013, 18:19:57 »

Hi,
I have searched site and cannot find any info on my problem so any help appreciated.
My drivers door stay or check strap (not sure of correct term) has broken of on the frame side not the door, I found plenty info for repairing the door side.
I was planing to just weld a plate to the frame and bracket but have noticed inside the hole there is a relay and wonder if anyone can tell me what it is for, and if it is safe to weld near it or can I unplug it.
I have a opel omega 2.2 - 16v - petrol - manual - W reg - gls - saloon
Regards TriciaS.

You can weld them on, most explod Ive come across are welded but with any welding on cars you need to clear behind it.

Sorry to be a bit thick but your answer makes no sense to me at all.
I am asking if anyone knows what the relay is for so I know if I can remove it so as I can weld the door stay bracket back on.

Remove the kick panel, air vent assembly and drivers glovebox. Remove what you can from the post and cover the rest with a fire proof mat, (the sort plumbers use or a fire blanket). Ideally remove the door card just in case and use a sheet of plywood or similar to shield the interior from sparks :y

IIRC the only things there are the central locking and alarm ecu :-\ mine wasn't stripped out to weld a support onto the post, but it was only a small tear rather than a gaping hole.

Well it is a small square thing, presume relay, just worry if it might be connected to airbags or something expensive to replace.
I can just see it through hole so hoped to find out what it is before just pull it out.

Do I really have to take the glovebox out , I thought it might be just the kick panel need removing and stuff a wet rag in the hole.
Obviously there must be more behind it than just 1 little relay.
Thanks for info I will try searching on here for pics under other subjects.

Didn't strip mine out, but not best practice :y

Obviously easier to get a fire extinguisher in there with the glovebox assembly out of the way, just in case ::)

Makes sense to me, yes you can weld it, just dont burn anything in the process.

Well thanks to all replies, I will take out the relay tomorrow as it is so close to hole but will leave the rest intact and hope for the best.
I was wondering if it might be a drl relay as my car is a import but right hand drive and I did read of the relay for the drl being in that position on left had drive cars.
Any thoughts greatfully received.

DRL module only fitted to LHD cars and is located behind driver`s kickpanel, (our passenger side)
