I know its late but lets talk tyres

Just been reading some other threads & amazed to hear that Tunnie's dad got 50,000 miles from one set of tyres & found myself wondering what they were made of - cos surely it can't be rubber.

I know we all have different specs but how far can you get on yours and what are they?

I have Pirelli P7's & good for 20,000 miles then all 4 tend to go at once.

Company cars for 8 years Astra Tds and a Vectra DTI, 40 -45k on michy fronts, 2 sets of dunlops in same mileage. Rear michys were still on Vectra from new at 55k when I left.

Got Conti's on the Meega, they have been replaced at least 10k ago as still got the sticky pad marks from balancing and they are at around 3.5-4 mm. Michy spare unused. I will never put cheap tyres on a car as they are a waste of money,  the leasing company proved that with the dunlops and all 4 wheels off for 2 tyres at Kwik fart.

The original Michelins on my car were replaced at 33k, got 4 Contis which did 15k since and are down to 4mm now, they will probably last 20k but looks like they will not match the Michelins' 33k.

not sure which brand was on my dads megga when he got it brand new... but i kid you not nearly 50k!!

I have Goodyear Eagle Venture's on mine, not the most grippy tyre as TB will confirm, however for every day use fine, grips enough for me when i push it hard.

The tyres have done just under 20k miles, 11k under my use.

According to the MOT i have 8mm at the back and 7mm at the front.. since buying it over a year ago not noticed any changed in the tyre ware!!

Its also going very even, right across the tyre. Best rubber i have ever had, and when they get replaced it will be with more Eagle Ventures.

I can see myself get 40k easy from this set under my use, however must point out most of the miles me and my dad do are motorway! I'd say 75/80% of all miles done so far have been pounding the motorway @ 80 usually....

My dads current commute is a weekly run to Birminham Airport, so his tyre ware is practically nothing!

Now I've never driven Tunnie's dad's car, but I have driven Tunnie's car, who also gets huge milage from the tyres.

What they gain in longevity, they lose in grip. Thats all I'm saying ;)

(Though being a poor student, he probably needs tyres that last, and he is a 'careful driver')

In my experience on the Omega I have found Continental Premicontacts are superb, as are Dunlop SP Sports.
I highly recommend Goodyear Eagle F1's too... loads of grip! ;)

Can't comment about grip... I mostly do traffic jams and Motorway driving...  :(

But the Eagle F1s have a lovely tread.... :)

I use the Dunlop Sport SP9000 on the MV6. Like shit to a blanket, though at the expense of wear rate...

I reckon Tunnie has got AA's mod, I reckon Tunnies dad must have AA's mod mark2.......an even bigger piece of wood  ;D

I'm running Khumo Ecsta's on my miggy, i would not call them budget, but they are not the premium brand tyres.

Low road noise, excellent grip, and i reckon i could get at least 25,000 from a set if the inner edges wouldn't wear away so quickly!!

Nearly all my driving is A roads and Motorways at legal or just above ;)

The Facelift 2.5 had Michelins on it when I bought it with 20K on it. They were bloody lethal despite having a reasonable amount of tread on them because they were TO HARD and were also showing sgns of crazing in the tread grooves to.

Since then its been Conto Premi contacts (do about 25K miles) which are excellent......

My main advice is....dont touch Michelin with a barge pole on the Omega....way to hard!

I had these fitted to a Cav SRI & they were great in the wet but a bit scary on tight bends - Pirelli's fitted to mine from new are quiet and reliable but must be affecting MPG, or is that the tow bar?  My old man had Continentals on a Vectra and hated the rumble from the road noise.
