Done the search on here .

9 members posted the fault,And from what i see,No one sorted it. :'(

p1870 torque convertor clutch stuck off (not present)

Spanner light comes on and lose low gears. till you turn ignition on and off.

This is on the AR/25 box,(although its the torque convertor at fault)so code says.

Light comes on when you kick down at say 60mph to overtake.

Is it time to move on to the more robust AR/35 ?

I had that problem for months after someone  replaced a skimmed head. It was only by pure chance that I noticed that one of the big round plugs in the engine bay was not connected properly after the refit. Ths sorted my code and it never came back. Probably not the same but worth a try.

Nothings been stripped on car lately,And fault on started on tuesday

a quick google of this fault will tell you that it might have something to do with the tc,all the code tells you is that slip was detected whilst the tc clutch was engaged,so therefore the tc is blamed.it could be any off the usual suspects,ie thrust washer,knackered clutchs,naff piston seals etc as well as the tc.i will have a look at my flow chart tomorrow

Hi there Sassanach,Yes i did google it, I am under the impression that the code(p1870) is flagged up owing to a difference in engine output and gearbox input ie:(clutch slip) And this is caused by low fluid pressure;And the low fluid pressure is caused by:- t/c, seals, cracked valves, Wear on valve bodies, Low fluid, All leading to possible fluid pressure being lost.

But from what i see they all seem to come up with about the same cure, This being:- Remove box,strip down and refurbish damaged parts,(if you no which ones)or remove and replace box with a known good one.

two things,check for the presence of a failed thrust washer, and two if you have one replace the 1-2 solenoid. :y
