Been a while since I have been to a scrap yard. Maybe 15 years or more.
Things have certainly changed since my youth when I got locked in at 6p.m. in one of the scrap yards in Leicester up near the Loughborough Road. I only realised what time it was when I heard Doberman Pinchers murmuring below. I was taking a rear cart spring off a Wolsey 16/60 (second down in a pile of four).
My Suzuki Vitara trim seems to be badly made from cheap plastic. The latest thing to fail was the drivers sun visor. I have been Emailing an enquiry form to the two places near me each month with "haven't got any replies". Both of them just have an office and punters are not allowed in the yard at all!
I was in Malaga yesterday so thought I would drop in. There are about 10 or maybe 15 recycling yards in a row all constructed at pretty much the same time by the same builder. Office where you make your enquiry and they either go and get the part from the racks OR tell you (roughly) where the donor vehicle is and off you go. It was a pleasant change to not be walking on compacted soil with a million gallons of spilt oil soaked into it! The penultimate place actually had two Vitaras in, the rest had none. Got one from the better of the two. 10 euros (about£8). I suppose that is the going rate.
The same yard had two facelift 2.5 diesel Omegas inside. Dead. Couldn't see why they were in there. Both had had parts robbed from them.
What I found interesting was the sheer number of folk using the yards on a weekday. A real money spinner especially as they only give about 100 euros for a drive in car. Not only that but they were doing repairs outside and in some cases pretty heavy duty repairs (e.g suspension). I dare say against the law as is (apparently) repairing your own car at home here!
As usual the police turn a blind eye to it all.
