In your place I'd start looking at the MAP sensor first - there's a small bore pipe running from the centre underside of the inlet manifold to a 2cm 'cube' on the drivers (assuming left hand drive) side suspension turret - make sure that isn't split and isn't full of oil residue.
Then it's probably also worth checking all of the vacuum piping to & from the EGR valve - there should be, at the very least, a small bore vacuum pipe from the vacuum gallery (runs down the centre of the inlet manifold from vac pump at front toward the rear where it connects off to the brake servo) to a solenoid valve very close to the aforementioned MAP sensor which will then run on (in another pipe) to the EGR valve. The solenoid may have two hose connections or three (with one going to a small filter) depending on year; my similar vintage car only had two, a later car had three.
If you're not sure which bit is which, post up a picture

Here's the ones I took when I had my TD..
Hose to MAP (hard to see but it goes to a nipple pointing straight down from the underside of the inlet manifold):

MAP sensor - note one single hose connection and single electrical connection:

EGR solenoid, note two hose connections and one electrical connection:
