Chevrolet Camaro returns to the UK
« on: 07 June 2013, 12:56:56 »

After an absence of 10 years, you can now buy in UK again, but only LHD. Surely you would be better off with a VXR8 where it is RHD.

economy is very poor. The manual returns just 20mpg, and 329g/km of emissions means a £1,000 annual road tax bill.

Thats a kick in the teeth eh  :( Although i doubt if the owner will blink much considering how much the car is  ::)

The biggest bill for road tax is £475 .... I've just done my R Class  :'( The £1000 is a one off new car 'tax' AFAIK  :y

Yes it's a bit ghastly and a bit too transformers for me, tbh.

Seeing as Vx can import a touring clubsport r8 from oz without much issue, could they not import one of these from Oz in right hand drive..?

I do wonder how dim GM think we are? The CTS V and Camero only imported in right hand drive...? Do they want to sell any? Do they want to compete with the bloody Germans? Doesn't look like it.  >:(

Pull the other one General.

Ideal for when you go to Ukraine Rods!  :y  Unless the local Mafia take a shine to it...  :-\

Petrol at 90p a gallon and LPG at 45p a litre means at 22mpg it would be more affordable. But with the deterioration of their roads over the last few years a 4x4 is becoming more of a necessity. In places on some quite major roads it is basically a track with the odd bit of tarmac here and there, which you thread your car through using both sides of the road if possible to miss the bigger potholes!  :o :o :o :o

Having seen some of the bills people I know with diesels have had, I'm more and more convinced a petrol engine and LPG is the way forward for cheaper motoring.  :y :y :y :y LPG is widely available in the Ukraine, the nearest filling station to where I'm going to live does LPG at a very reasonable 45p a litre.

Driving to the Ukraine and back, the fuel will be much cheaper of the return trip, with both tanks full that should give about 700 mile range of cheap fuel. I can temporarily import the Omega for 12 months. Getting a replacement Omega over there with a proper sized 3.0/3.2 engine is going to be difficult after 12 months as they are very rare.

Only problem is import duty. You are charged 10% of the value of the car plus the size of the engine. Older cars are more expensive than newer cars.

Link to an import calculator:

http://www.qdpro.com.ua/calc/cars

If the car costs €1,000 then the import duty is UAH126787.24. There are about UAH12.5 to £1. So it works out at just over £10,000. That is why secondhand cars are expensive in Ukraine.

Try this link and put in Opel and Omega and you will see that a 2000-3 facelift will cost $10,000-$12,000 for a 2.2l or a 2.5 diesel.

http://rst.ua/

Plus on top of that the paperwork to get an imported car registered which is not meant to be easy. I will find this out with my motorbike as I intend taking that. But, because there is no Ukraine motorcycle industry that they are trying to protect taxes are much lower at about 16p per cc, so it will cost about £200 in import duties VAT etc.

I suspect it is built there especially :-\ The older Camaro was sold there in right hand drive too.

Latest Camaro is built on the VXR8 floorpan :y

Wow!!  :o  So whilst this is not a problem for your average oligarch, what does your average Ukrainian drive?  ???  Are there no exceptions/exemptions?

My mate is moving to Uganda in July where they have similar import duties on used cars. However if you have owned the car for more than 3 years you are exempted from import duty.  He's shipping his '03' BMW 325 as it's cheaper than buying a similar one.

I'm already half expecting emails along the lines of ' Can you send me a couple of shock absorbers as I've bust mine... '  ::)
