As above, for the GS. It's got a dry clutch, so normal car oil should be fine? I'm considering DIY service jobs on the bike

I would have thought the normal 10/40 semi would be fine tbh. Ive used it in my bike for a few years as has DLK.No problems at all,even revving to around 13,000rpm.

Big ass low revving boxer up to about 6/7k rpm, no worse than a car. 

So be good if I can use 10/40, all I need is a £6 tool to remove the oil filter, as oil changes look dead easy on it

Reading up on GS forum, some people there use 10/40, it's recommended even more so for high miles bikes (mine is 38k)

I use GM in my ZX10, and (not checked) thought that was a wet clutch. OK, it only revs to 11.5k, so a bi more agricultural than modern designs.

Popped it on trader, had a load of bloody scam mails. Only one decent bit of interest, did not return call as I took it out for a ride and liked it too much 

Think high miles are putting people off 

I figured at this age, the new liquid cooled GS is out now, its going way of the 1150 GS. Its 7 years old now, I think its no longer really worth the stamps.

As we discussed other day, what is there really on this thing? The shaft drive is sealed, just had its fluid changed so good for long time yet. Been researching changing other fluids such as gearbox, looks dead easy, few bespoke tools needed like a long neck drain. Air filter looks bit more fiddly but still easy, parts don't look hugely expensive either. Oil filter is around £10 from BMW, so figured why not

You know my thoughts, we've discussed at length, and hence I still have my ZX10.

As to DIY servicing, thats probably going to be the decision to sell soon, or keep long term (until its worth sod all).

Lack of interest shows its probably priced too high.

Keeper long term is an option, as the bike could save a lot of time on a new Surrey/Hampshire commute, as that Chiswick Roundabout and slip to M4 is always blocked solid, could save a big amount of time there on the bike. Looks like I'm keeping my shifts for good while yet, bike for mid-week work, car for weekend shifts.

I priced it lowest 56 plate, in the top 10 of lowest price GS's - Considered selling for something smaller, Yam XJ6 which were brand spanking new when I passed now kicking around for under 3k. But 20 mins riding small 600's and my back aches, shoulder pains, crap visibility really.

Took GS out last week, up high, see all around, plenty of poke for my needs, knew if I took it out I'd keep it

Its a long time since I had a bike ('55 Speed Twin since you ask), but I'm surprised that 38k is considered high mileage for a well engineered piece of kit like yours.

If you take a look on trader, of the 1200's very few have above 20/25k miles. Most have around 15k 

When I test road a few, one I eventually bought rode far, far better than some of the examples with half the miles.

My 97 TDM has 18k on the clock    I think it's done a couple of hundred miles over the past few years.

I guess bikes are always just the toy, so get little use.

Might as well run the bike for the long term, been researching oil threads on GS forum. Which is not fun, quite a lot of bashing a pish taking on those threads!

But looks like a few years ago 10/40 was the recommended oil, so think I'll go for it.
