Oil question
« on: 09 June 2013, 11:53:46 »

Is there any advantage or disadvantage  :-\ to using 20/50w 0il as opposed to 10/40w in a higher mileage v6 petrol engine. ;)

Can't see the point in the UK's rather moderate climate, also given GM's 10/40 is so darn cheap can't see the benefit?

That said I am thinking of trying some Fully Synth 5/30 in the 3.2, as recommended by the master as its got a noisy lifter

You may find it to thick for the lifters, however the straight six 24v love the stuff. My LC has done around 1800 miles since rebuild and has always been run on 20/50 but then that's what they recommend for that engine. the point I'm trying to make is they both hybolick lifters. If you are using a fair bit of oil and use fully synthetic try using semi synthetic, it seems to slow down the oil consumption.

my reason for the question is on start up i get a puff of smoke from exhaust (possible valve stem seals)as its a 2.6 v6 and was wondering if 20/50w oil being a bit thicker in viscocity would help with this :-\,but do understand all the comments on the lifter side of it :y
don't really fancy taking the heads off if you know what i mean,i seem to use about 1/2 ltr of oil a month at the moment and engine has  109,000 miles on it.

If the problem is worn valve stem seals it will be a better option to replace the seals than to use a non reccomended oil to cure, and there is no garentee that it will make any difference to the puff of blue smoke on start up at all.

Stem seals are well known issue on early 2.6's I can see a thicker oil helping there, it may cause issues elsewhere, breathers for example?

How many miles do you get to 1/2 litre?

try 15/40 do not use 20/50 its to thick and will cause issues with blocked breathers, and also doesnt have the same additives to protect the engine, other option is to use stp oil treatment with every oil change  :y
