all I've seen so far are relatively new stuff, how about some bikes that took some holding on to. Panther's, Velocettes, Ariel, BSA, Triumph ,Norton, Matchless, stuff before 12v lighting !!
OK:  Royal Enfield Crusader 250, 6v lights courtesy of Lucas (AKA the "Prince of Darkness")

Me on my way to school circa 1981.

That was because it was the first time I had ridden it after buying it as a box of bits 3 months earlier. ;D

think in hindsight the crusaders were reasonably oil tight, front tyre looks rather chunky from memory, and does the rear tyre remind me of an avon sm. many years have passed since the days of the enfields and other british bikes. and if I really go down memory lane one of my neighbours had the Triumph Bonneville as a test machine while riding for the factory !

Tyres were as purchased Avon SMs. Hard as bakelite and terrifying in the wet :o The front tyre had straight grooves running round the tyre (nothing across) the rear had a square profile that would have been perfect for a sidecar combination.

I soon switched to Dunlop TT100s. Much grippier and a better shape and tread pattern but smaller diameter (which wasn't good for gearing or ground clearance).

A legend amongst tyres way back then. :y :y

By the standards of today they'd probably provide as much grip as an excited dog on lino. :)

personally I preferred the Dunlop k70 for the rear but cannot remember the front tyre make/model, but that was on the ariel arrow and later the leader without the fairing and engine cowling but with trials bars instead of standard !

Avon roadrunners were the stickiest thing in the 80's , we had them on our RD350 LC's  :)

Being a teen of the mid '80's i wasn't into "Rice Burners" but something more European/Italian

Must stress that this isn't a pic of mine as all my old photos in albums somewhere but it very similar apart from mine having cutdown panels

We had some cracking times back then and made friends for life
