2.2 Auto - Common Problems / Things To Look Out For?
« on: 15 June 2013, 01:37:07 »

Hey,

There's a 2.2 Auto for sale at my local trader, possibly a CDX as it has a few goodies but with cloth seats.

My knowledge is geared more towards the V6 motors so I was just wondering if anyone could give me a couple of tips on what to look out for when buying a 2.2 Auto?

Thanks!

Usual things, Cambelt AND waterpump must be changed every 4 years/40k, oil around cam cover gaskets, although thats dead easy DIY job.

See if its cold engine start rather than warm when you get there, if its already warm, maybe trying to hide a split exhaust manifold which appears quite common.

Rest is usual Omega type stuff  :y

Plastic gearbox? Where on earth has that come from?  ???

Its does a fine job of handling what it was designed to, a 4pot 2.2 is never going to challenge that box even remotely! Its a standard fit to 2.5/2.6 V6 which kicks out nearly 40bhp more as standard.

Unless you have a chipped 2.5TD or a 3.0/3.2 the AR25 will go on for ever!

I read in my Haynes manual that the cambelt change intervals have been increased up to 80k.
Is this only on the 2litre only or does it encompass 2.2 also? :-\

It's wrong, it was first 80k on V6 but quickly dropped to 40k, same as 4pots.

All petrol driven Omega engines are 40k or 4 years, which ever is first  :y

2.0/2.2 also needs waterpump changed too on belt changes.  :)

No specific engine issues on the 2.2.

Cam sensors fail, but it should still drive reasonably well, though starting can be more difficult
Exhaust flexi's fail. Weld new one in, do NOT replace cat. Ever.
Coil packs fail (as per 2.6/3.2)
Cam covers fail (as per v6)
HG failures not uncommon
Wear on pot1 if poorly services (ie, serviced to GM spec!)
Throttle bodies gum up a bit

The AR25 has no issues on such a low torque engine, though the 4pot/auto combo does feel cumbersome around town to me.

Cambelt (and waterpump on 2.2) is every 40k/4yrs, no matter what anyone tries to say they've heard down the pub.

Thanks TB, how would I know if the first pot is worn exactly?

You can't unless you take the head off  ;)

But look for oil service history  :y

Thanks tunnie,

no specific sound that gives it away then?

Went over to the dealer an hour or so ago, no one was there so I got a chance to visually inspect it as much as possible... the one thing that shocked me out of everything was the fact that not even the slightest bit of rust could be found! And its done 116,000 miles!

Couple of things I've picked up on:

  • Central locking could be a problem, the rear and passenger doors are unlocked but the driver is locked - possibility that the battery is flat. Anything suspect that may cause a battery to go flat?
  • The glovebox door handle is missing...
  • I also spotted this weird button on the dashboard I haven't seen before. It could be an LPG switch but I looked around the car and couldn't spot a filler cap.
  • Zero rust / dings / dents - *shockface*
  • No cruise control so definitely poverty spec (so not CDX like I though)
  • Rear tyres bordering legal limit.
  • No visible oil leaks on floor.

Any ideas what this switch is then?

Threads come along with members(and me) saying:

My auto gearbox holds gears too long when hot..

My auto gearbox does a sudden thud into gear at certain speeds.

My car can be going along, then suddenly jumps out of gear,But its a auto.

And it is always the Ar25 box that they have.(Never AR35)

And it always seems to point to the solenoids in the main sump. :y

The switch you've pictured is for Traffic Master,a service that I seem to remember seeing on here is no longer available? But if it still is I believe it was a subscription type of service. My F/L 3.0 Elite has this fitted[I've never tried to use it]instead of[I think]the built in satnav that others are fitted with.
