Edward Snowdon
« on: 02 July 2013, 10:21:55 »

I didn't take too much interest in this at first but as the story is unfolding it's becoming quite interesting.  :)

The Hong Kong authorities seemingly dragged their feet when the US government requested his arrest and extradition and he flew to Moscow, where he has been for over a week now.  The US have revoked his passport so he can't travel and the Russians can't arrest and extradite him (even if they wanted to) as he remains in the transit area of Moscow airport, which technically is not Russian territory.  :-\  Although I'd bet my bottom ruble that the Russian security services have thoroughly 'interviewed' him!  ::)

It's reported this morning that he has applied to 21 countries for political asylum and the US is screaming blue murder that they want him back!! The irony is that America has granted asylum to Russian and Chinese dissidents in the past, but of course I'm sure that this is completely lost on our friends in Washington.  ::) The other irony is that if he was Russian or Chinese and had spilled state secrets they would also be fuming and possibly would take direct action, remember Litvinyenko?  :o

All in all, it's like something from the cold war!  ;) Will the Russians let him stay at the airport? (which is probably crawling with CIA agents!!) Who will blink first??  :-\  :y

Apparently during the flight home from Moscow, the President of Bolivia's plane has been diverted to Austria as France and Portugal closed their airspace, on suspicion that Snowdon is on board...  :o

This gets better and better!!  :)

Hmmm.... not sure how much credibility he actually has :-\ Potentially he has already proven to be in breach of his employment contract. The Central IntelligenceOxymoron Agency simply needs to deny everything he says. The most powerful government in the world versus one person. Right or wrong, he stands no chance :-\

This all raises some interesting questions. For example. The whiter than white USA (that spies on everyone -even its own allies) can make other countries close their airspace to force a plane to land. Is it Carlos the Jackal on board.? No just a normal guy who whistleblew to let the world know.

There was a good film on TV a few days ago based on Plamegate.

Fair Game iirc, with Sean Penn and Naomi Watts. A touch more subtle than Farenheit 9/11, to be expected given it was made in 2010, but amply demonstrated just how determined GWNutBush was to re invade Iraq...

.. who was clearly onto something given the number of nerves he's tweaked in the US of A. ;D

Bit of a miscalculation on his part that nobody's put their head above the parapet and offered him asylum, though. Looks like he'll have to ask his mate Assange for advice on long-term kipping on a sofa. ;)

Oh yes, you can just imagine some of the high level "discussions" going on involving Western government and their "agencies".  Making offers that cannot be refused comes to mind! :D :D :D :D ;)

But from the American perspective, a guy who is a traitor and has released secret information that could weaken / threaten western security. ;)

Unfortunately for Mr Snowden, the US will be working on the assumption of what he might/could know rather than what he actually knows :-\
