Do USAians have a concept of "irony"?

There is a claim that USAians do not - hence the reason that much of British humor escapes them (or appears to).

However...
I have the following evidence which points towards the fact that not only do USAians understand irony, they are actually BETTER at it than the Brits.

1. The USA celebrates its independence from the British Empire on the 4th of July.
As far as I can tell, this is the only date which is referred to in the British way - ie., Day then Month - every other date is written Month-Day. Compare 9/11

2. The USA is, as far as I know, the ONLY country to celebrate it's independence from the British Empire. It is ALSO the only country to still use empirical measure - ie, lbs, feet, pints.

3. 7 1/2 years after a muslim extremist declared war on the USA, and after declaring war on 2(?) muslim countries in retaliation, the USA elects a muslim to lead it in that war.

All I can say is - "Well played America. Well played" - you managed to convince a country which is famous for appreciating irony that you don't understand it - whilst doing it better than they ever could.
