Coming down to the old Software v's Hardware when the Hardware Engineers blamed the Software and the Systems Programmers the Hardware. I always played the diplomatic  ::) piggy in the middle as a Senior Systems Consultant ;D ;D (It was a long time ago :o ::) ) Always fixed it in the end. :y :y

I am coming down on hardware in this case, trouble is which bit ??? If a Tape Drive or Disk Drive went down the Engineer would always request that the one next to it was put offline, he would then put his scope on the failed Drive and swap bits from the good Drive until he found the fault and replace the duff part. Mind you he would then disappear into his office and fix the failed card not just order a full PCB, they were usually ex RAF Electricians so were pretty useful. :y :y

hmm, I wondering weather your Ram is buggered.
Is that likely?
Worth while removing and reseating the memory module(s) just in case I suppose.

The last time I saw such a dramatic refusal to boot it turned out that the heat sink had fallen off the processor and was lying at the bottom of the case. The processor managed to keep it's cool long enough to get half way through the boot sequence.

Given the hot weather I wonder if your cooling fan is inoperative  :-\

Its possible and worth checking, the Boot is not going to get very far if the Ram has failed, had a couple in the past that have done this now.

I would recommend any Laptop, Notebook gets treated to a covers off and a gentle brush and Hoover at least every six months, especially around the fan area, you be surprised how much dust and fluff builds up inside, overheating is probably one of the bigger killers of these machines.

And not just laptops  :D ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D

This one is fairly clean the problem I have is the hardware fault diagnosis, there are some good videos on You Tube on how to take it all apart and replace specific parts but how do I know what has failed ???

If you were nearer, I'd say pop it round. But its 160 mile round trip.

That's very kind of you. :y Now he's on about buying a new one, then the little bugger will want me to rescue his music file from the HDD, think I'll charge him a case of Peroni for a USB IDE/SATA adapter. ;D ;D ;D
Know doubt I'll find out one way or T'other when he either moans that I've not fixed it or comes round showing off his new 'un ;D ;D ;D

I've fixed it, the HDD was completely Fubar, did a bit of part swapping with another laptop, so new drive and an Op Sys rebuild :y :y :y

So my lad can either get a new one and put a new Op Sys on it  or buy a new laptop. Either way he's lost all his data, BACKUP ?   far too busy isn't he ;D ;D ;D

THANKS for all the help and suggestions  :y :y :y
