A good friend's party trick when we were a lot younger was to carefully unscrew the steering wheel and pull the steering wheel off the splines and hand it to the (terrified ) passenger. He had a pair of mole grips handy  , which he said would do if the worse came to the worse. I was never sure it would work.

I wish I had had the presence of mind to hurl it out of the window when he did it to me! ;D ;D

Must admit to using mole grips when moving motors about (thiose with no steering wheels)

Me too,but on the road with 2 flat tyres while off your head on various chemicals is a bit different. Should be a shooting offence imo.

Lotus 7 style kit cars often have a removable steering wheel to ease getting in and out. I remember on one tour we were offered the chance to park up on the paving outside the Falkirk wheel, where we all convened at the start of the tour. The place was plagued with hi-vis jackets everywhere, and we were given strict instructions that the cars had to be pushed into place without the engine running, such is the highly skilled art of parking a car - we were bound to get it wrong and end up in the canal, after all.

One of my mates, who, being a mere campaigner of a single seat racing car and general driving god, was clearly going to struggle with this, so was given extra close attention by the high-vis types, who crowded round his car full of advice designed to help his parking manoevre go without incident. At one point (with the car still in motion) he removed the steering wheel, handed it to the nearest of the hi-vis wearers and said "here, why don't you drive", then calmly crossed his arms. ;D
