Morning all can anyone help please ive just had rac come and find out why engine light was on the fault code was po420 any ideas what it could be also is car ok to drive it seems ok thanks :y

Standard cat below efficiency code.

Common and nothing to worry about. Did he clear the code?

I'm amazed the Rac came out to that! You could have done it yourself with a cheap code reader, or even for free with the pedal trick :y

I know i just called them out i didnt know what it could be so the rac man they carry the laptops done a check so nothing to worry about oh good  :y

If you search here for 0420/0430 you'll find it a common enough problem, and is nowt to worry about in itself ...... BUT ....

If the light is on and stays on it is now masking any other problems that may arise, that could actually be very much more important .. SO...

A cheap code reader/resetter that will allow you to check the codes then put the light out is a worthwhile investment. You can now get one that will work, via bluetooth, with a free app on an android phone, for less than £20. Does little else of use, and is not quick, but will allow you to read codes, check what they mean, then reset if not important ....

0420/0430 .. it's not "IF" they occur .. its "when" they occur .....  :)

And... Its the PRE cat that has a low efficiency problem.( NOT the the main cat, which is working fine and cleaning all the nasty gases as it should so the mot won't be affected by that code)

But I thought it needed both codes present to bring the light on. :-\

Nope .. either 0420 or 0430 will bring the light on .. :) For some reason I get 0430 more than 0420 .. :), and I expect to get one about next wednesday .....  :)

Strange I have 0420 regularly on mine, but no light.  ...yet. ;D

I think it has to 'see' the fault so many times before it puts the light on. If it only very occasionally sees it, it will log an 'intermittent' code in the ecu, which is detectable via a code reader, but doesn't put the light on. I think ;D :y

Provided we take the engine ecu out, I guess I have most of the other electric components in the mv6 if needed.
