Trade Club consumables
« on: 25 July 2013, 21:38:17 »

A mate of mine mentioned in passing about the fact you can get consumables from Vx on the TC. Anyone know what's included and the sort of prices, is there a price list floating around somewhere by any chance?

Yes, thats true.

You will not find a printed price list, prices are available online once you have a TC account.

Had a quick look but couldn't see anything listed for the workshop consumables such as boxes of gloves etc...

Just wondered if it would be cheaper getting from Vx than a diy place or halfords etc...

Anyone know anything about it?

The page I found on the TC site just said I had to 'ask my local TC dealer' .. be interesting if we could get gloves/brake cleaner/carb cleaner/etc etc cheaply, as you say.

I've just been into my local VX dealer to order the list of parts as laid out in the maintenance guide by Mark Hornby Scape Goat to change the cam cover gaskets. Cam cover gaskets,O rings, sealant etc etc, total bill £293.00.  :o :o ouch!! Then on to BuyPartsBuy ordered cambelt kit,aux belt, plugs all filters, water pump and oil, just a tad over £200.00 all I can say is thank God for pattern parts because if I'd ordered the rest of it at V/X it would have probably exceeded the value of the car.I know that there's the school of thought that OE is the only way to go but I fail to see how VX can justify those prices. We fitted Europarts cam cover gaskets to the other 3.2 4 years ago no problems with leaks to date. So am I thinking that I've been mugged?personally yes!! I'll obviously fit these parts because they are bought and paid for,but the next car will be getting Europarts cam cover gaskets etc as the car only covers around 1500 miles a year.

The plenum & bridge gaskets really push the cost up on that job if you're replacing them, as I don't think they're on TC (just Trade) with only a small discount from list price.. based on the last invoice(s) I have, anyway.

No need to replace plenum gaskets etc. None at all. Cost of camcover gaskets,o-rings & sealant should be approx. £80.
If your water pump aint broke, dont fix it,unless your engine is a 4 pot.

The thing is that this particlar VX parts dept have a stock remark that I get when I try to order anything Omega...that there's nothing in stock and that they will have to get it from other branches etc and it's going to take some time. This really gets my back up and it makes me want to take my hard earned some where else and stuff it! I'll just fit pattern parts as of all the 12 years of Omega ownership I rarely have used genuine parts and never had a break down on my 2.0 with nearly 200.000 miles on the clock. It makes you wonder at which stage VX will pull the plug on the supply of Omega spares and then we may all be relying on pattern parts of varying quality :-\
Just caught your post Albitz....took the info in the guide as all required,at least it'll be a pucker job,you live and learn ::)

While it may seem like vx only is the only recommended route, given recent conversation with a cirtain 2.2 owner that can't understand that cheapest is not best, it does only seem that way. Honest. ;D

The trick is to acquire the oe parts as cheaply as possible, that may mean vx, or on tc, or independent oe supplier such as lemforder or fag for example, both less than half the oe price on tc. Who cares where they come from as long as the most longevity is acquired for the least money.

Certainly a good £30 can be saved buying from an oe supplier v6 cam belt kit from a factors, as gm are not particularly competitive in that area, even on tc.

I guess another way of looking at it is, for example, buying cheapest, in the case of pattern cam cover gaskets, and doing the job twice or more in the same period of the life of the oe part is never going to be financially successful. Both in parts costs, and labour time be that paid or diy.
I would argue in that case I would be prepared to pay double the current cost of the oe v6 cam cover gaskets to insure they lasted, say, 80,000 miles for example. Especially when you consider that a pattern part only lasts 3 or 4 months. A
Although IMO, oe cam cover gasket life is poor at best, granted. Its still the most cost effective route after all.

Hopefully that will be taken as an example of the thinking behind what's recommended to us here, as i understand it, rather than an excuse to kick off the whole pattern part argument again.

But you see the idea?

Pay a bit more, for decent parts, for the best longevity available. (Hopefully ;D )

I suppose, if in doubt, post your shopping list up, and see what people say is the best place o get them...? :)

If that's the Reading branch? They are useless tbh, not even a dealer, just a parts counter....but a good few omega parts are no longer kept on the shelf at alot of main dealers. Slough anoy me in that respect. What is the point of keeping 3 cam cover o rings in stock...? And once, no hbv's. ::)

Bracknell seem the most reliable ime, if you can get the bloke to come  to the bloody counter that is ;D

I think it was the shock at the size of the bill that got me going,I just thought it was a lot for what it was, accompanied by the usual crap customer service....note to self, before I do something stupid ask for advice on here and then take said advice and use it wisely ::)
It was Bracknell and your right.pressed the buzzer and then waited for more than 5 minutes, but usually when you order parts there they are pretty good at ringing you when they arrive and have never had any mistakes...so not all bad I guess.

It's well worth the postage to get bits from AndyC, IME, and avoid main dealer hassles, if the parts are small enough for that to be practical.
