Is this 5w30 halfords oil better recommender for higher milage cars ? Currently on GM 10w40 ..

OOo starting a debate there  :o

5w30 is a thinner oil, so as TB says it can escape easier.

I'm looking to try some as I have a sticky lifter in the 3.2, thinner oil might just work its way into that lifter better and get it pumping again.

Worth a go at those prices Kevin linked to, its normally, much, much more.

didn't you have the oil light flickering at idle on the 3.2,5w30 could make that worse :-X

Yeah, I was thinking of getting 4 bottles. 6.5L or so per change, so 2 bottles would do one change with some left for spare/topping up.

Might be worth getting some more, at a tenner a hit, or your next recommend Oil Change is going to be bloody expensive or dependent on Halfords next promo offer on Full Synth, assuming your going to commit to running the car on that stuff.  ;)

Wondering if I should get another 4.

That said, GM fully synth 5w30 on trade club isn't bad value. About £60 for 20L IIRC.

Just ordered 4 bottles, thats 2 changes for 3.2. So 6-8k miles? Given its current very low miles, if it does help I can wait until next offer I think. Or go GM  :)

Thanks for heads up Kev, did you get 5w30?

Master recommended some fully synth for my 3.2, guess 5w30 is best? looks like a good deal!

Yep, get the fully synth 5w30. :y

I've been using 5w30 for years, and used Halfords stuff last time this offer came up. No problems. :y

That saves me having to ask the same question  :y

Trouble is, I just don't do any of my own work or servicing, so not sure when I would actually use it  :-\

Ask the garage to use it next time you have a service. They usually charge by the litre. :y

A note on the "thinness" of 5w30 oils:

There is probably more variation in viscosity of your oil due to varying operating temperature between summer and winter, light and heavy engine load, etc. than there is between a 10w40 and 5w30 oil. Oil "hot" viscosity is rated at 100 degrees C when in practice it sees a wide temperature range in actual use, yet your engine copes.

As an oil ages, the viscosity improvers tend to break down, meaning the oil thins. This happens more rapidly with semi-synthetic oils than fully synthetic. By the time your 10w40 semi synthetic oil needs to be changed it might well be a 10W30 or worse, yet the 5W30 will have done a better job of staying in grade.

In other words, it's not worth worrying about. Both are suitable for your engine, so take your pick. I'll go for the fully synthetic that's GM approved. :y Bear in mind, though that Halfrauds do a 5W40 fully synth as well, for those who don't want to move to a 30.

Definitely go for fully syn over semi if the price is the same or even close- no brainer.

One word of warning though some fully syn is ACEA C3 spec oil (eg dexos 2 spec).  ACEA say  "Warning: these oils have the lowest SAPS limits and are unsuitable for use in some engines. " I suspect C3 is aimed at diesel exhaust particulate filters and very modern cats.  I would worry about using it in the mig.  Quite a few fully syn oils are C3, especially the expensive ones.  I note the Halfords one isn't.

When cold, perhaps, but once it's up to engine temperature it'll be the same as any other 40 grade oil (and still a good deal thinner than it is when cold).

All the Halfords "cheapo" oils are made by Comma - click link http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_907231_langId_-1_categoryId_165581, scroll down and click the link for "Safety Data Sheet"  ;)

Still good price though, although wouldn't personally use it.  Its a matter of personal choice I guess.

Well at what point should I have posted that " I cirtainly wouldn't put that coma crap in my car, and I feel this stuff is similar quality" ...?
Because if I'd posted prior to this post, I would have been accused of some sort if snobbery, and after I'd be accused of being wise after the event.

But no, in any event, not for me. Thanks. :y

I've always found comma decent enough I used to run syner-g in my old cavalier turbo which was a high mileage on a never-rebuilt turbo and it saw syner-g from about 90k to about 145k before the turbo let go so can't fault it... Also run syner-d in my daily diesel and again, I haven't broken it yet. So this halfords stuff will do for me  :y

Specially as its £9.50 on a trade card, WINNER!  :D

I'd be surprised if the Halfords oils are consistently from the same source, to be honest. It's wet and slippery and conforms to the relevant standards. Good enough for me. :y
