Loss of power & slight miss fire
« on: 29 July 2013, 11:02:24 »

During our annual 1100 mile journey south suddenly started feeling a loss of power, box kept kicking down even on the level and a slight miss fire with high revs. Switched to petrol and although not as bad still present.

Pulled in at next services looked under bonnet. Car ticking over ok rev it high no missfire, Coolant/oil level ok no obvious cause. Only odd thing was a rattling noise from under car, around the cat area - heat sink maybe? gave it a couple of knocks and a wiggle and seemed to be the actual cat although couldn't tell. Checked all round for loose vac pipes etc nothing really obvious - new GM plugs so maybe not them, coil pack maybe ?

Anyway it was 35.5 degree's so thought it might be related so set off to see. Still there so push on the next services.

Then going up a big hill the power loss and miss fire got worse as though fuel was running out, kept my foot down and then "whoomph" a sudden increase in power like a turbo had kicked in and everything was fine, if not better. Car has become more responsive, more oomph, and the ave mpg has gone up by 10 !!!!?

So to me the clue is the cat, rattle is more pronounced and exhaust note is slightly lower. Did it somehow become blocked and then blow through? It is a 2 yr old pattern one (i know don't but I did) and a new rear silencer fitted just before setting off.

Symptoms may match a blocked exhaust (not necessarily cat).  Any horsehair out the tailpipes?

Not now, that's why I've just replaced the back box

Perhaps the horse hair came from further forward and found its way into the new back box before being expelled.

Sorry Henry/TB missleading info - back box failed about a month ago replaced it a couple of days before setting off - no wadding has come out since.

My thought process is being influenced by when removing pre-cat and seeing improved power and mpg could this have happened to mine by failure of either cat. Although I am not seeing any errors from the lamba's (EML).
