While puzzling* about why certain people (you know who you are!) refer to my shiny new** X-type as a Mondeo, I had a rare flash of recollection.  I seem to remember that a few years back there was a lot of fuss about some Rolls-Royce and Bentley models being built on a Chrysler chassis.  So I just Googled "Bentley Chrysler", and sure enough, there's a bunch of miserable killjoys on various websites moaning that the cars are not real Rolls-Royces and Bentleys.

Didn't read very much of it - only stayed 30 seconds, in fact.  The likes of me don't belong in such elevated circles.

Just out of interest, what's wrong with the Jagdeo?  Or, more precisely, what is your specific objection to the species?  OK, I appreciate that your experience with the example owned by your wife was somewhat less than Optimal, but it seems like a good car to me.

Mind you, I have to admit that it's gone back to the garage again.  It whistles.  Above 60 mph, there is a penetrating and highly distracting whistle that even I can hear, and I'm a double hearing aid user.  It's so distracting, that I missed my turnoff and found myself halfway to Felixstowe instead of Colchester.

I see it as a cynical marketing exercise, similar to the Vanden Plas Allegro, which was an Austin with delusions of grandeur.

given that only 19% of the x type is a ford.....  (pretty much down to the floor pan, and block)  it seems a little harsh.....

my experience seems better than either of yours....   so far,  found 1 small oil leak, (less than that on my omega)  replaced all 4 tyres (to keep profile same to make sure transfer box stays happy)

clutch price is eye watering though,  but found a reputable 4 year warranted aftermarket unit for £350 delivered. including the dreaded dual mass flywheel.

might get it changed as a precaution,  although it books as an 8 hour job....   which is going to be pricey.

everything on mine works,  there are no funny noises,   it drives straight and true, handles tightly and precisely, more so than my Mv6 ,  and it's comfy, and very very pretty..... 

only complaints.

1) headlights are sh1t, on dipped beam, and barely acceptable on full beam ,  sadly my 2.5 v6 sport estate  is a little older than std fitment of HID to the model...  (mine first registered jan 04 )
so aftermarket bulb upgrade is in order....    apparently , bulb changes are a complete pain in the ass.,,. so looking in to reliable HID-alike bulb upgrades,  don't want to do it every 3 months.....    pondering the advisability of the illicit 100 watters you can find ,  i had competition grade  140/100's in all my senators, adjusted properly,  made a huge difference...  and  never caused any problems,   and no MOT tester or plod ever spotted them....  but i'm still a bit worried about doubling the current draw on any one circuit.

2) getting head rests out to fold back seats down is a bit of a pain,  clumsy compared to omega tilt button method.

3) Sat nav and phone lock out of certain functions as soon as vehicle is moving....  meaning you MUST be stationary to enter destination,  or check a message,  despite the voice control etc....   (mind you i've not yet trained the voice control,  maybe it will be more useful if i do   )

while i understand that this is a safety feature....   i much prefer the omega implementation of locking out at over about 60mph.

under normal driving conditions there's a huge reduction in my fuel bill!

but bloody hell it notices if you stick a roof rack and ladders on top for a long motorway journey....    changes from 32mpg to about 27 ......   

if this thing was badged as a ford i wouldn't much care....    i generally don't like fords,    hired several over the years , always hated them..... this on the other hand,  i really really like....... 

i am however, sorely tempted by the 2.5TD omega estate i just spotted on the evil bay.

i still very much love omegas,  and if twiglet had put his up for sale just 10 days earlier,  i'd have had it so fast he'd have needed burns treatment on his fingers.


I still haven't had the heart to scrap my Mv6,   it's too good for that.... but no one is showing any sensible interest,  and i need my driveway clear....

Now that's what I call keen.

Our X-Type was reasonable when it ran well, but that was probably one day in five. The rest of the time it sat on the drive with it's bonnet open.

if I had space in the garage, id SORN the Mv6 and consider it a long term project,  however there's already a project in there....   my Son's corsa....  and the daughter's astra on the other half of the drive, means i have to park the jag on the road.....   not happy about that given the estate nature of where we live these days.

Don't think that's quite the same thing.  Vanden Plas was a coachbuilder, and the car you mention was only ever seen as the top of range Allegro.  "Vanden Plas" was no more than a badge, much the same as "Elite" or "Ghia".  Even the big Princess limos were seen as Austins.  Perhaps the only Vanden Plas that was truly different from its base model was the Princess 4 Litre R, which had a Rolls-Royce engine, I think.  (That was a truly smashing car - I always wanted one, but they were well out of my price range.  Had to settle for a Wolseley 6/99 - handled like a bus, but didn't half shift in a straight line.)

And in answer to your other question, yes, the garage are fixing the whistle.  He wasn't very happy, as he's at least 10 minutes drive from a road where he get the thing up to 60mph, but he agreed to fix it without argument.  Have I found a trustworthy dealer?

• No clutch - mine's auto, so that's not a problem
• It's comfortable, and almost everything works, and it's quieter and handles better than the Omega.  (Er... quieter until you put your foot down - then it makes rather a pleasing noise...)
• Haven't taken it out in the dark yet; in fact, since I bought it, it's been bright sunshine here in Suffolk, so I can't see the odometer.
• Back seats don't fold - it's apparently not the Vanden Plas version.
• No SatNav or phone, so I doubt it's got voice control - it's never spoken to me.
• Don't know about the fuel consumption, but with the oxygen sensor out, I suspect it's doing about 20mpg at best.
• Very reluctant to scrap my Elite, but like you, I need the space.  However, now I've got a (mostly) working vehicle, I might try to get the thing going again.  It's all economics.

the vanden plas allegretto   was, still basically an allegro,  with some fancy wood stuck in it, and a grille change,   that's hardly  a fair comparison to the Xtype,  which....   bears no resemblance to a mondeo whatsoever....   and i'm told,  only shares the floorpan and block with the mondeo....   

and frankly,  If ford build mondeos half as well as this thing....  i might be persuaded to buy one one day.... but so far i've hated the lot of em.

i have to say i'm not a fan of the back end of them.....  it looks horrid......   but the estate.... my god it's pretty....

Yup! Kids grown up and left home (mostly), no dog.  My estate days are over.  X-type boot is reasonable size, but doesn't compare with the Omega.

Agreed.....but by using the name they were 'hoodwinking'  customers into believing that they were buying a vehicle of superior quality. They were not.

friend of mine had the 2.5 v6 x type. bloody money pit, gearbox died then the transfer box then the abs rings,o and mustent forget the permanent lamda codes even after all of them were changed, and the place were he took it,to have the gearbox/transfer box done said that,all these faults are common with this car,sold it for what he bought it for,still cost him about £1500+ in parts,
 looked good on the drive,and the pub "Ive got a jaguaaar"
