Did anyone else see the documentry last night?  It was just clips from video clips taken by passengers and crew. Very little naration, just camera clips.

OK, cheap TV, but I found it incredibly moving.

I chose not to watch it as I'm going on a Med Cruise in a couple of months and didn't consider it appropriate viewing.  ;D ;D

Must have been terrifying for those involved though.  :'(

I went on a Med cruise and got "bored" and thought I would go up to the bridge. It was all on auto pilot though there was a member of crew swabbing the decks nearby. I couldn't see anything ahead so availed myself of the next buffet. Never got my 10 stone figure back since. I think the captain was having drinks with a dancer somewhere.

PS don't be put off. The concept of going to sleep and waking up somewhere else dry is great especially if it is Rome.

Saw that one a few months ago - and again last night. Emotional and scary for the total lack of organisation and concern for the passengers

If you remember the Townsend Thorsen disaster in the eighties and the Concordia have made me always have my own plan of escape when travelling on ferries etc.

For those who have not seen this before this is the live web cam that overlooks the wreck which is still there

It was a bit wierd. Very soon after it happened I was flying to Rome and we could see the ship on it's side from the windows of the plane.

We did the DP system on the cost a Costa Concordia.

You won't get me on a cruise ship, I now know to much about the construction, cheapest and lowest redundancy on the seas. Hence an engine room fire or loss of a switchboard and everything but the emergency generator systems are lost.......including propulsion.

And me. Includes aeroplanes even down to deciding which exit looks best manned You cannot control the pilot/driver but you can exercise some control over your destiny. I have actually experienced an aborted Ryanair takeoff at Reus (well in the air) when a bird strike took out the engines and we landed amidst pandemonium. Most sheeple aren't good in a crisis.

That's not restricted to liners and indeed, they have a greater response capability than a vlcc or container/cargo vessel.

As soon as a descision is made to close vents and flood the engine space with inert gas then that is a last ditch once only call.  Once done, if fire still burns, then it's time for the boats!!

So there are good self preservation reasons for not wanting to go on cruises, in addition to not wanting to be banged up in a tin can with people you don't like for a week or more  ::) . . . . . and not being able to just go home at any time

Nope

There is a documentary series on TV about life on a cruise ship. It has totally convinced me never to do it. Actually, it would be a close thing whether to do a cruise or go to Dignitas in Switzerland  :-X. They both seem to be very similar  ;)

It's not the programs about it that's putting me off as I didn't want to go anyway, but the mrs does.  ::) I'd rather be holding up the M5 with my caravan.  ;D ;D
