2.5 V6 Auto. Car dies at traffic lights
« on: 03 August 2013, 11:50:21 »

Hi guys,

stopped at some traffic lights yesterday. car died. as if it had stalled. put in park, restarted. no problem. didn't think any more of it.

it did exactly the same today.

car idles lovely at 400rpm but have noticed it's jumping lately.... not too much.... but could it be dropping enough to stall the engine? so an ICV clean needed?

any other ideas?

cheers

Read codes, either crank sensor failing or ICV sticky  :y

Also, 400RPM is quite low.  I'd be expecting 600RPM, or slightly higher with A/C on.  :y

I would leave it auto, keeps the compressor ticking over in the background. Leave it off for too long and it could cause issues as it may dry up / seize.

Tut tut ....As Tunnie says, besides, how economical can a 2.5 V6 be?  ::)  ;)  ;)

Wouldn't do any harm, but I doubt there's be anything. Give the idle control valve a good clean out with carb cleaner/similar & a finish of with a squirt of light oil in there.  :y

Mine was doing the same recently, turned out to be the MAF.

I think the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve is another possible culprit. Not sure if that can be cleaned  :-\

The EGR can be tested by disconnecting it.  It will bring on the engine management light but will run as normal.  If stalling stops, then you've found the problem.  EGR can be blanked off, there's plenty info on this on here. You can also install an EGR cheater to keep it disconnected but put the light out - info on here about that too.

Similar with MAF. If the problem goes away when you unplug it,then the MAF is the problem. :y

When the crank sensor went on mine I had similar symptoms to Webbys, although as others have said there are many other possibilities, get the codes read :y

Read the codes Webs. ;)

Firstly I'd clean ICV and check breathers clear.

As said try with MAF disconnected as diagnostic.

Then consider replacing Crank Sensor (your symptoms are the same as mine before my C/S went completely)

With a/c off, your idle speed on a 2.5V6 should be a steady 500rpm ;)

HTH ;)

Ac on will open the Icv more to increase the tick over to account for the extra load of the ac pump.

The Dbw cars hold a constant 600rpm regardless of ac on so don't compare the performance of the two IMO.

But, ime, you have typical icv issue. Clean and light oil. Might need several cleans to take effect. (Dont be tempted to open the valve with a screw driver or metal object like I did, as it will easily chip and then stick. ::)   :-[  ;D )
