Straight Cut Exhaust
« on: 21 August 2013, 21:02:02 »

hi fellow enthusiasts...

i am thinking of getting my exhaust cut through and taking out the centre boxes (3 litre).. any advice. Will it affect the performance. I'm really just doing it to get a better note from the exhaust. cheers

The restriction of the exhaust is in the manifolds, not exhaust itself. By removing silencers all you will do is make it sound louder & make you think its faster.  :y

It's not a turbo and so has been designed to have a certain amount of back pressure in the exhaust to function. V6's tend to lack bottom end torque anyway. Doing this will probably make it go slower in normal conditions. Re-tune/modify it for track work and don't let the revs drop below 4K and you'll be fine.

Many years ago I cut the middle box out of my SD1 V8 exhaust and welded in a sleeve as a temporary measure to save a few pennies as I was going on holiday in a few days time. I fully intended to replace it, but it sounded so good that it was still like it when I sold it a few years later.  ;D
I would like to point out that this car had three silencers, so removing one just made it sound like a typical American V8.
Having run my 3.2 with just the down pipes, albeit very briefly to get it up on ramps, it was loud, very loud.  ;D ;D
Not sure the back box alone would keep it street legal.  :-\

The problem is, the middle boxes are designed to damp resonances in the exhaust system, which is why cheap pattern ones are so nasty. The middle boxes aren't dimensioned correctly so the exhaust drones at certain frequencies. I think cutting them out will just make it resonate at certain speeds. If cutting anything out, It would be the back box for me.

I have an Omega without a rear box - and to be fair, it sounds really quite good.

This would be best and easiest to do - the "in" and "out" pipes to the centre boxes are not in line.

I've done this and I lasted about 5 minutes before I cut the pipes back out and re-welded the old ( rotten ) boxes back in.  The noise was unbearable.  It didn't seem to affect the performance but I didn't really give it long enough to to make a accurate judgment.

In my opinion its just not worth the effort and it sounds terrible.

Once bought an SD1 Vitesse with a straight through pair of pipes and nothing but a pair of cherry bombs on the back. It was audible from far too far away and was deeply unpleasant to travel in. The previous owner had also failed to notice the large S bend in the final tail section which was there to stop gasses being drawn back into the cabin. Two small free flow boxes per side later and you could travel in it pleasantly.
