Cannot remove rear screw from top heat shield, looks like I must drop downpipe first then attack from below. Is it safe to just unbolt the downpipe and let it hang on the cat section, or should I remove it altogether?

Manifolds can be a huge pain ! I normally let them droop down but put a block under it to rest on

got a mini jack? I usually support the cat with that, when doing any exhaust work. Bit more important on the 4 pots as they have a flexi, but with V6 i'd still want to support it.

I'd also give the exhaust downpipe bolts a blast with plusgas first, good stuff  :y

V6 exhaust bolts to the gearbox mount, so unlikely to drop far :-\

Might as well remove and be done with it :y gets it out of the way if nowt else :-\

Block it underneath to support then undo the gearbox mount. :y

Downpipe needs to be quite flexible as you will need to pull it off the manifold studs which are quite long ,otherwise you won,t be able to remove manifold once all undone.

Heatsheild bolts are a pita  >:( as get very brittle with constant heat cycles so lots of patience is required. If they snap its not the end of the world as can be drilled once manifold is safley removed away from car.

Thanks for the advice chaps. I could not get plusgas in Midsomer Norton, no-one had heard of it. I used the blowtorch instead. I removed the downpipe altogether, as ex taxi al recommended. As he said, it got it out of the way, and also allowed me to move the car out of the garage while I obtain spares.
