sky broadband settings
« on: 25 August 2013, 21:31:59 »

Is it possible to block certain devices such as smartphones/tablets etc from accessing the web wirelessly? At the moment I have the laptop, a few mobiles, and the sons tablet connected. I want to limit the time the tablet is connected and block it when needed from connecting. How can I do this without changing the password all the time?

Not really a big fan of McAfee. Is this just parental control or must you install the antivirus/spyware ?

Access is controlled via the Anti-Virus, fully automated. There are other options like limiting on MAC address, but thats all very manual

I doubt that will help in this case T, unless of course you can install it on the aforementioned "smart" devices.

What the OP needs is a router with a half decent firmware that allows you to specify access times on a per device basis.

Better routers allow you to configure access times against fixed IP address's.

So configure the IP address's (which is done based on MAC address's amd is useful as a security feature in itself) adn then add a rule for that IP.

Assuming the router will do it (as the bogo cheap ones dont)

Better routers allow you to configure access times against fixed IP address's.
That means SMD has to assign a static IP to the device, and you know it won't take long for the kid to figure out how to drop back to DHCP and get back on  ;)

I've just had a thought, you've hit the nail on the head with MAC addressing......if the Sly router lets you set access times based on MAC address, then it won't matter how smart the kid is because he won't be able to change his MAC.

A much cheaper, quicker, and easier solution was in the title of the software that Tunnie posted IMHO.........parental control  ;)  ;D
