Speeding fine???
« on: 25 May 2008, 00:17:10 »

Hi peeps, can anyone tell me if the new civvy motorway patrol people ( I dont know there official title) check you for speeding  :-/. The reason I ask is I was on the M- way this morning and it was quiet the weather was good , the road was dry, so I thought I would "stretch" the Meega's legs ::) .As I passed one on the hard shoulder attending an apparent breakdown I think I saw his partner veiwing me through a hand held gizmo ( cant be sure it was a bit of a blurre  ::)). Anyway can I expect a speeding fine to flutter through my letter box within the next few days :o, I hope not :-/

Hi Tony, if they were Motorway Patrol and not the Police you will be OK. I never take any notice of them ;)

They are Highways Agency bodies and have no statutory powers re: speeding and motoring offences. His "hand held device" was probably his coffee cup!

Cant be too carefull where they have radars these days, they have done the wheelie bin thing. and technology is getting smaller.

In all honesty  I dont know the answer but I would not be concered too much based on what the oteher guys have said. :y

Yes, as already been said they have no police powers, and especially in terms of assessing speed.  However, there is a chance that they will radio the police if you are considered a real danger to public safety.

Having said that I have passed many of them at very high speed, on a clear road, without any reprocussions because they have no more powers than you and I.  So don't worry about it any more Tony, but make sure you can identify the differences between their 'patrol cars' and the real thing! ;D ;).

Yes, they do pass on intel -- and share the same control rooms! I think the differences between their vehicles and police vehicles are deliberately difficult to assess immediately on purpose --- you see a battenburged vehicle with a light bar and you tend to behave ;)

I suspect that it will only be a matter of time before they acquire some official powers to assist in policing the highways.

Bit sneaky --- but not beyond the realms of possibility --- although his "visibility" could be brought into question, I guess.
