Peugeot 406 Diesel Estate
« on: 25 May 2008, 16:53:59 »

I'm seriously considering one - aparantly 47mpg and I know they run well on chip fat  ::)

Anyone any experiences with them? I've had the saloon models before, and quite liked them :y

A guy a t work has had two, he replaced his older one with a newer one so he must have been impressed. I know Peugeot make a good strong Diesel, but that's all they do, just my experience ::) :-X

Can't get excited about anything Peugeot made, I'm afraid. If someone were to give me a 205GTI with an MI-16 engine in I might change my mind, I suppose. 8-)

Very good cars in my experience. Good load carrying capacity and the well proven 1.9 lump. Never managed to get less than 45mpg.

Very reliable as long as it has history and the coolant has been changed regularly (HG is a weak link when this is neglected).

As a cheap(ish) relaible and very economical workhorse they are hard to beat.

Oh and quite easy to tune too.

Cheers Dave

I know all about the HG weakness - I had to change one on my 405 (same lump!)

They look complicated, but they are not at all bad to work on  8-)

Although, I made it do another 40,000 miles while it was unwell  ;D

I love the miggy's, but I'm tempted with the way fuel is, to get the 406, especially given that I have 2 scotland trips planned!

I'm interested to hear more about tuning, though ;)

I had a reaaly naff one in a 405 TD estate.  HG went, then the camshaft snapped, then the rad blow a hole, then I pushed it off a cliff (not really but I wanted too, gave it to the breakers in the end!)

I was a passenger, in a 205GTi in a smash up near Bristol. It wasn't pretty - I've never got in one since  :'(

I bought a new one in 1999 V reg, superb car. Like many others though, cambelt, regular oil changes etc, then again I am sure you know that already. When mine was out of warranty, in 10 months I put 75000 miles on it as a taxi/courier a Peugeot mechanic looked after it. One strange thing he did every year was to remove the radiator, back flush it and fill with fresh Peugeot anti-gel, anti freeze. He reckoned the cooling system needs to be in top condition to preserve the head gasket. I never argued I just let him do it, anyway when I sold the car with 258000 miles on, 4 years later, on the last slip in the payment book, it was running fine and never had a H.G.. A regular run was from Durham to Amelia Street, near the Kennington Oval cricket ground and it would do there and back to Doncaster ( 600 miles ) before the fuel light came on. Great car in my opinion.

IME the weakest part of the whole 405/406 set-up is the gearbox... Recovered a load of them at around 130k with big holes in the side of the gearbox where internals have let go... Engine wise they're pretty sound, as long as the previously stated items have been looked after!

Are you sure you aren't tempted to go along the Miggy route with a LPG conversion? Reasonably close figures in real world terms and you still get the fun of owning the quieter, petrol variant of car!!  :y :y

My only complaint about most cars is comfort when on long journeys, which I have to say is no issue whatsoever in the Mig!!

Oh I nearly forgot, Peugeots are very resistant to rust, better body work than Mercs in my opinion.

A few broken bones and injuies on my part concur with this  ;D

Must admit, it was a fun car though, and with ABS, would have stopped, or at least significantly reduced the impact...!  :y
