what should the effect be on the engine if MAF disconnected while running? I thought it would make it run lumpy, but may well be wrong, just going through all the issues with my on going  EML problems.

Disconnecting it will put the light on, but the ECU assumes a default value, so engine will still perform happily enough  :y

When my MAF went on the Elite, it was disconnected (as car wouldn't run with it connected) and car used for a couple of days until replacement MAF arrived.  No running issues, and no warning lights on.  Smoother when new MAF fitted though.

Ran mine fine with the MAF disconnected, might get slightly higher fuel consumption though.
