Iv'e got AVG as well but been informed that the current version will not have anymore updates after the end of May. Think they are trying to get people to change over to AVG 8.0 which, i believe, will not be free. :(

Avast does the business for me, also free, but use 'ad-aware SE' if any unknowns crop up, they don't (yet).

Not convinced with avast.  Came up with a root virus on a friends computer which it couldent remover..  Tried several reputable root kits to flush it out but there was nothing!

I use AVG too..

But learned one rule , theres no completely trustable virus scanner..

No precaution will keep you safe forever.. :(

Only solution I can find is keep a back up USB drive (notebook drive)  for important files..And a ready system installation CD with drivers..

AVG 8.0 is a good upgrade, but the free version doesnt have the stop scan function (useful if you havent been on the web for a few days and therefore no need to scan) best to set the schedule to When your not using your pc . My pc has 2 terrabite hard drives and this can take up to 6 hours to do a full scan so its done overnight. And as CEM says, any important stuff keep on an external usb hard drive, there as cheap as chips today
