Take a reasonable amount from them, say £100 per week, stick it in a savings account and after three or so years they have some semblance of a deposit :y

If their wages go up, then take more :y

Two boys 19 and 17, I would charge them. The wife won't let me  >:(  But if I ever want to have sex again I agree with her  :)

That said 19 year old in an apprentice on low wages and lives with his girlfriend most of the time. 17 year old is doing A levels and still hsa a paper round, he earns about £18 a week, seems a bit unfair to charge him anything  :-[
The wife is way to soft on both of them.

£300 a month.   ....

I'm sure that my daughter would pay up if we asked that of her, but it's a balance act of pricing them out or letting them stay & save for mortgage/whatever. I'd prefer to subsidise her if she stopped at home  ::)

And whats to stop you putting 50% of it away on the quiet to help her out.... :y

Some years back I gave my two the option ... 75% of total wages if food/laundry/phone etc included, 50% of total wages + 25% of utility bills if they did their own cooking & washing etc.

Initially they thought I was "profiteering" as my son put it .. until I sent him out to "price up" renting somewhere and being truly independent... when he discovered he would have no money at all left  .. he had a rethink !!!

They both were happy with the arrangements until they were earning enough to go "fully solo" and enjoy the independence they deserved and were capable of financing.

Might not suit all kids, but did my two   :)

My two are no longer at home. My son is renting/sharing a three bedroom flat with others and what he pays per month scares me stupid, I think it's around £800 (this is London!). Probably way more than he would be paying on a mortgage. But of course youngsters are unable to raise the 20% deposits required. Landlords are making a mint !

All depends on whether they are saving off there own back.
Also got to take into account how much they actually do around the house (without been told / kicked)  ;D
If they lazy buggers and are not saving now then its time for a harsh leason in life imo and hit them for 30% and give them a list of chores to do.
If they pull there weight around the house then 25% and stick 5% away (without telling them) for that wonderfull day when you and the boss missus get your house back  :)

At the end of the day Mike, i've never met your clan so hard to say  :)

I was lucky, mine was free. But I did save around 60-80% of my income into my flat deposit.

Don't charge anything here, however the eldest has moved out now, and the youngest works for me, so I can't complain.

How much rent will you all be paying when you're living with your kids and they're looking after you? :D

He'd be able to save £800 a month towards his deposit if his dad would let him stay at home.....gratis. ;D

In the late 80s, when I were a lad, I paid Mum £20 a week.  When I initially moved out (as my parents moved to East Anglia), I wangled a room at the local farmers college for £30, before lodging for 3yrs (great times) at £35. All this time saving like buggery to get a deposit to buy my first gaff when I was 21, despite the horrendous interest rates at the time.

SWMBO and I am hoping to move and get a large house in "The Provinces". It is likely that my 90 year old Mum will move in with us into a Granny Flat attached to the house we want.

How much should I charge her ?   ;)  . . . . . . errrrr
