Finding A Kerbweight
« on: 08 September 2013, 15:26:12 »

Hi - Have a 1999 (T) Omega Estate 2.5 V6 CDX that we use to pull a caravan MTLPM 1550. Always pulls great with no problems.

Bought another as backup 2001 (X) Omega Estate 2.5 V6 CDX but it doesn't tow nearly as well and seems to struggle with hills and we always seem to be going down the gears and also the rear suspension seems very soft (too low) and the back arches look as if it is sitting on the wheels (not good)!

Wondered if there was a way of telling whether there is a dramatic difference in the kerbweight which is the cause of the problem? Cenrtainly there isn't a change in our loading capacity as we load the same every time.

What about self-levelling - Can anyone tell me how to find whether the car should be self-levelling or not?

Would adding spring assisters help?

Questions needing answers folks....!

Weight will be roughly the same, Facelift is only a tad heavier, it's listed on the drivers door pillar  :)

Secondly only Elite spec came with Self Leveling as standard, so CDX is unlikely to have it  :y

For lack of power have you ensured the multi-rams are working?

All is explained in the link I've provided above  :y

Basically when they are not working correctly, engine is considerably down in power  :)

Also check you don't have a broken rear spring or two,if the car sits really low at the rear.

Thanks Peps!

Another question: Are metal brake pipes cheap enough to fit?

Our X Reg broke down coming home Aug BH and RAC said it was the drivers rear metal brake pipe was leaking brake fluid all over the wheel and unsafe to drive so waited to be towed home with caravan on the back - s'pose we saved on fuel.

Gone back to using the old failthful T Reg which has now developed another hairy exhaust pipe - Rear box need replacing again..!

The suspension may need attention if its looking soft. As someone said, the springs sometimes break, and certainly the shocks age.  Before getting a garage to check these things, I'd see if a local member wouldn't mind checking the suspension over with you and advising what, if anything, could be done to improve it.

As tunnie suggested, the multirams may need checking, but there could be a whole host of other things that could cause a lack of power. Kevin Wood lives just outside Alton, and has the full Tech2 diags equipment. Might be worth seeing if he can take a look.

There should be little difference between the older 2.5 and the facelift 2.5. The gearbox ECU fireware may be older on the new car, but that would most likely only affect how/when it changes, rather than appearing to lack power.

Replace the whole system, its far better.

I'd rate Eternal, a supplier from eBay. Their centre exhaust sections are double walled, they last well. Looking at around £120 cat back delivered.  :y
