97 2.5 TD Elite estate MID/MID display?
« on: 08 September 2013, 20:17:10 »

My display has gone blank! Do I have MID or TID?

Is there an easy fix or do I require another unit?
Does anyone have one for sale?

Does anyone have a DIY fix?

Offshore Congo at the moment so answers in the next week much appreciated.

Cheers

Elite will be MID.  If gone completely blank, check the backlight bulbs first.

If a 97 model, it needs the older, unreliable 2 plug MID, if a 98 model (sold from halfway through 1997), it needs the more reliable 1 plug MID.

Got a early MID one, (Yellow Plug) from an V6 Elite, but got no way of testing it  :-\, seem to remember these are Auto / Manual sensitive as well, all works ok but Range could come up =F or =0 if not on the right gearbox.

Cheers for the info, I'll follow that up when next in the UK, later this month.

Thanks for that, like I said, I'll have to check it out later this month.

Is the fuel computer line above the radio station info line, or the other way round?

Ooh now your asking, y'know it's been that long since I drove her......... I think it's fuel above the radio but not 100% certain.

Head restarints, solid or with a hole? Side airbags? Clear headlights or ribbed lenses?

In reverse order, ribbed headlights, no side airbags and head restraints with a hole.
Never knew this would tell which display I have!

I also cannot remember the date of first registration other than 1997.

I really appreciate the effort being put in for me, thank you.

2 plug type, Radio info line above Fuel Computer lines.

This is the less reliable type, tend to suffer lines of pixels to fail. It appears to be ribbon to glass connection failure. Whilst TIDs can often be repaired, MID is often considered too fiddly.

With this type of MID, you are looking for one from an Omega with the same gearbox and engine (later MID has a lot more options).  If you can't get one with the right config on, tech2 reqd to reconfigure.

Replacing it with the more reliable, later single plug MID is doable, but will require some rewiring behind the MID.

Sounds like a Yellow Plug type Mid to me, as said sure the one I have is a good'en but cant test it. Seem to remember I needed one for my CDX Manual TD, and it came from an Elite V6 Manual.  :-\

IIRC, both hotel21 and SMJ have tech2 so getting reconfigured should not be a problem.

For the later, more reliable model, just how much rewiring is required?

Would it be a case of snipping the existing double plug receptacles and fitting a single receptacle to match the plug? Is there a fair bit of play in the loom or will I be working hunched over as close to the dash as I can get?
The rewiring does not present a problem in itself but maintaining the required position maybe could do!

Cheers

Yeah, just cutting plugs, and popping new one in. So you'll need both wiring diagrams to hand.

Loom is a tad tight.

Tight you say?!?!?

I'll have to have a good look when I'm back there, see how do-able it really is.

Would a pyro pen be better than a wired soldering iron?

I'd remove the battery (to stop shorts), then remove all the individual metal connectors from the original plastic plugs, and insert them in the new type plastic plug. I *believe* the actual metal connectors are identical, and they clip into the plastic plug.
