Cars your folks had when your were a nipper
« on: 23 September 2013, 19:58:52 »

Reading a post from Old Man Wood a moment ago reminded me of the fond memories I had of the bangers my parents had when I were a lad.

Dad had a Citroen DS Safari which he allegedly "jousted" in a carpark when dropping Mum off at the hospital to spit me out. Lovely car in a far-from-tasteful green.

I remember we (a family of 5 kids and 2 parents) went camping every year in it. I recall one night, driving up to camp near a relative in Lockerbie. My sis, little bro and I were "asleep" (read: arsing about) in our sleeping bags in the boot, my 2 older bro's on the back seat, and Mum and Dad up front, driving up the motorway. I remember being aware of some commotion from another car, eventually able to hear them shouting at us that the trailer (tent) was on fire. Dad stopped, got out, put the fire out (it was the trailer tent tyre), changed the wheel, and carried on as if nothing had happened.

Mum had a red Fiat 850 Sport Coupe, a 1l pocket pocket. Ran on 5* petrol, which was rare, even back then. Used mostly for school runs when I was ickle, as my school was 5 miles away. Often I was picked up with the cat fast asleep across the rear parcel shelf ;D

Both of these were bought new in Cyprus, when we were posted out there. The Citroen was replaced with a brand new W reg Citroen GSA, the Fiat was replaced with a Citroen AX GT, another pocket rocket, but lacked the performance of the old Coupe.

The GSA was replaced with a A reg Mk3 Escort estate, can't remember the reasoning, but we'd had the Escort just laying around since my cousin died (it was his). God awful car. Needless to say, being an Escort, I wrapped it around a tree. Or was it a signpost. Can't remember. I got it fixed for Dad, but then he wrapped it around a fence driving it home from the garage ;D

The Escort and Citroen AX were replaced with a K reg 318is, that Mum still drives.  Worth break all, but goes well enough. IMHO, last of the decent beemers.

We didn't have a car when I ws young, too poor. Then my Dad had a Morris J2 minibus to drive round the local area to collect people who were going to church - 20 miles away. Three times on a sunday, tues night, thurs night and sat. night. Which is where I inherit my holy mannerisms from. ;D
Then,we moved near to the church and Dad got a well paid job (working in govt security in Belfast in the 70,s & 80,s - so ££££ danger money). He then rekindled his strange loyalty to Vauxhall. Had an HB Viva, then an HC Viva, then three MK1 Cavaliers, one after the other, then a dark brown Nova saloon (god alone knows why),but I had moved a long way away by then so couldn't say noooooooooo !!  ;D
His last car was a new Astra in the late 90,s. He had his licence taken away when he had one of his many heart attacks or mini strokes.
He got it back on the day of Mums funeral (Aug 2000) and threw it in the bin saying it was no use to him now.
He lost it again a couple of years later after a major stroke, and has never driven since.
I saw the old rhino a fortnight ago. Hes in an awful state, physically and mentally, bless him,but still insists hes a better driver than most people on the roads, and claims hes going to get his licence back in the near future. It takes him 10 minutes to walk 5 yards, but he has that old fashioned "never give up, never give in" attitude.
He very much likes the description of my "big v6 Vauxhall" and wants to come over to England to have a drive in it. If I could get him over here,I would have him driving it on the local airfield, just to see the pleasure it gave him..
