timing belt
« on: 24 September 2013, 19:50:23 »

When considering changing the cambelt what parts will i need ,do i need a new water pump, think doing it myself is too risky so would i be best getting genuine bits or pattern, then approach garage with parts and get a quote. One last thing what are the costs involved, would hate to ruin my car after finally getting it back on the road by neglecting cambelt ,thanks for help

Not essential to do waterpump. See how much play there is in it first.

As not many garages can live up to their claims when doing GM V6 cambelts, I'd see if you can get an OOFer to do it - even if it means a nice day out somewhere.

If the front end is stipped down isnt it best to replace the water pump for a relatively low cost as long as you dont use a GM one. I must admit however that when my cam belt was done recently the pump taken off, a GM, did not appear to have any movement on the bearing. The other problem is which pump to purchase now that QH has gone ( I wonder who manufactured the QH pump)

Previous thinking was that it was worth changing the water pumps with timing belts due to the time and effort to get to it.  This was ok until recently.  The quality of water pumps, pattern and GM has dropped significantly, I have seen one go spectacularly after a couple of years.  Now the thinking is that unless it has play in it then best leave the pump in their alone.

Was it not a conti we fitted to yours? I've never had an issue with these, though I would change it every belt change just as " belt and braces "

The only pattern ones I've seen fail are the ones with the extra thin pulley on the outside requiring shorter bolts

I'm sure yours will be fine, so sure, if it fails inside of 40k, I will change it FOC :y

Hello James yes I was told by Buy Parts Buy that it was a Conti so hope it lasts 4 years. You cant be expected to replace a pump free of charge when I purchased it and you just fitted it that is customer service gone too far. Thanks again for the cam belt job the car runs better now than it ever has. Just a note for other OOFS When James did my cam belt he found that the previous belt was one tooth out the old belt was fitted by a garage. Thank god for our experts.

I had a run of finding belts which weren't properly set up. I wonder if its just a sign of general garages not having the kit to do the GM v6!
