How desperate is this? If James can't help out then I can probably supervise you doing it in the new year

I wouldn't worry about the belt mine is a 2000 v6 maintained and moted by a Vauxhall dealer from new all same garage done 61,000 miles and never had a belt can covers leak so some smoke out the bonnet but clears after about 30 miles when towing car was one owner from new and only 2 bits of rust on it and goes like a dream apart from slight hunt when first starting and dash illumination dips with it

So smoke out of the bonnet?  ???

Might want to check those cam covers  ::)

Cambelts must be done every 4 years, or 40k which ever is first. However as many have stated, water pump is not critical on V6, but main drive belt is  ;)

As said belt kit at 40K or 4 years - your luck is holding at the moment!!  Says a lot for the level of service of your Vx dealer for cam belt leakage and smoking as well!!  Bet they've never done the breathers either!!  Not impressed generally with Vx garages level of knowledge or level of service.

As an example the Vx main dealer in Corby fitted new front discs and pads to our Estate prior to us buying it (discs/pads were MOT failure) - and instead of fittind new brake wear sensor, chopped and shorted out old one!!  Pillocks.

I know the cam covers seep but seals when engine gets hot dealer changed water pump but never did the belt glad it's not my local dealer just not got the knowledge to do belt or covers and can't justify £350 to have the work done might sell it or scrap it if belt breaks

Hard work to read that, might want to think of some punctuation in there  ;)

Leaking cam covers when cold is not a good sign, you are saying it takes 30 miles to clear  :o

I'd advise you change the belt, as if that goes it end of the road really. Why take the risk over quite a small charge?

Speak to some of the OOF mechanics here, they can do it for a lot less than £350  :y :y

Not sure if this is a wind up TBH :-\ :-\ :-\

Even at £350, what can you buy that's known and reliable for £350? ::) ::)

ach to their own I s'pose... I'm quite happy with the £000's I'm spending on mine as it's a known entity, not starting from scratch with an unknown. Once all the niggly bits are done on mine it will be almost new (mechanically) at 100k :y

Let's make this clear... It has been known for tensioners to fail at a shade over 40k (in fact, one failed at about 4 miles but that's another story!) so the advice is 40k or 4 years. Any other comments by Fred's neighbour's son's mate down the pub that they can be left is utter 'dangle berries'! Not abiding by the service interval is like playing Russian Roulette with your engine ::)

EDIT: Not the bit from Toledodude, the comments by Simon.

Yep.. ::) And no matter how cheap the car is, you've got to pay for routine maintenance and consumables or you're going nowhere. £350 is peanuts for 40k miles motoring. Work out what you spend on tyres and fuel in that distance. ;)

On that basis my car isn't worth the price of an oil filter ::)

Hell I probably shouldn't wash it either...
