Front mount ic on a 2.5td
« on: 28 September 2013, 19:47:42 »

Have any of you guys seen or heard of someone fitting a front mount on a 2.5td?

A friend of mine done it using a quarry screener intercooler. Was totally home made but worked.

Was with my fabricator today.  The way its going to work is..... twin pass intercooler pipes to the driver side. Reason being ther is no way to get a pipe through on the passenger side. This will leave it a shorter system. The only one I can find is 600mm  x 350 x 75. Which will mean removing the windscreen washer bottle and either finding a smaller one to go in or fabricating a new one.

Also the air intake pipe needs removed to allow for the ic pipes so will need rerouted but ive this covered.

Thoughts,  comments suggestions and stick welcome

Sorry just realising it wont shorten the ic system. Feel free to discuss

Not really much scope with space available in front of the rad, without blocking it too much.

If your TD has an intercooler fan, something that may help is to remove the power sapping viscous fan, which will allow the engine to run a shade warmer...  ...enough to bring on the electric fans, which brings on the I/C fan frequently.

This has to advanatges - it stops the I/C fan seizing, and this fan is really effective in dropping temp.

Then beyond that, wire up a relay/switch so when engine is running, it brings on the fan.

I think you'll find this far more effective, and easier, than another intercooler.  Its certainly cheap/free enough to warrant a play.

If your I/C is the fanless type, get a fan from a breaker :)

Not that I'm aware of. But should be relatively straightforward for any auto electrican to find a fed from a circuit thats only live when the engine is funning, and add a relay...  ...or add a dash mounted switch that controls a relay, which is how Omegatoy did his (and testing on his, the intake temp drops by several degrees with the fan switched on).

First of all check the I/C fan runs. Many are seized (due to lack of use, due to that silly viscous). If yours is, disconnect the battery, then turn fan by hand a few times until free, then connect it directly to a 12v battery for an hour.
