TD running hotter than a few days ago
« on: 07 October 2013, 21:23:47 »

Hi all,

My TD is running hotter than it was a few days ago and I have not changed anything.

What can I do to investigate?

I don't think the thermostat is stuck closed as the car does stabilise but it is running hotter than before.

At 70 it runs at 95 now, when a day ago it was just over 90. Then when stationary it goes up to 97ish, which again it would never do before.

Any suggestions?

The level of coolant is correct and the correct mixture.

Thanks

Possibly rad sludged, have you flushed the system lately? Has the coolant system been well maintained? My TD runs spot on the mid point, but I have the dreaded viscous fitted during the summer, it comes off when the clocks go back ::) :y

Could it be the water pump/impeller?

I think the rad is ok but could do with a flush I guess. It was just the sudden increase in temperature from one day to the next, same weather, type of driving etc that leads me to think maybe the water pump has lost some vanes, heard thats a problem.

How do I know if it has got metal vanes instead of plastic? How about this one?

Had pretty much the same with mine as well, I stripped out the rad & water pump as I happen to have spare ones, I couldn't change the thermostat as planned as I couldn't get the bolts out, Anyhow my water pump although o,k was changed out for one with a metal impeller as I don't trust plastic :P, Changed the rad as well & now it seems better,(although I found another job to do with a rusted out cross member :o), You might want to check the thermal switch on the rad while you are at it i case it's getting lazy. :y

Just checked mine and is steady at 94, and has been since I changed the stat, pump, and a good flush. Possibly your stat was stuck slightly open and is now operating correctly. In any event, 95 is the desired cruise temp. :y

Hiya,

Oil service history is very good as I've been doing it every 3000 miles as per OOF recommendations.
I will change the oil this weekend as it is due so maybe that will make a difference.

Thanks guys

see its a sludgepump :o

auto box cooler is also in the rad, when the box gets tired the heat is transferred to the radiator side,it can be a sign the box is
a, getting tired,
b,needs topping up with fluid,
c,fluid and filter needs changing,

can also be other things as mentioned but the sludgepump at 97k is on the limit?
