Its handy having an ex police car sometimes!
« on: 28 May 2008, 13:39:52 »

A little story since im bored J

Went a little drive last weekend down to the seaside for something to do, driving along a county road and as i came around a blind corner i was faced with 2 cars on my side of the road over taking a car that had stopped. So on the brakes hard and just missed them! Then my attention was drawn to the car which was stopped, and as we went past all i caught sight of an elderly gentlemen slumped over the wheel, so shot down to the bottom of the hill until i could see partially round the corner, (he was on a incline between 2 blind corners) a quick half donut for safety (as it would of taken at least a 5 point turn on a blind(ish) corner) shot back up the hill, by this point the 3 cars that were behind him when i past had drove away, pulled into the normal police position so i could get out safely, ran up to the car and with a serious sigh of relief, the gentlemen pulled his head off the wheel and explained that his gearbox had gave up and he didn’t know what to do (by this point several vans and cars when queued behind us and a fire engine came round the bottom blind corner full chant with an artic coming the other way, fire engine tried to stop but couldn’t and luckily the artic was able to and fire engine shot by with a very scared looking driver!) so at that point i decided that we had to get him out of there, i stopped the artic and let the others pass, i offered to push him up the hill (with the miggy of course, i aint no strong man!) but he wasn’t too keen lol so i told him to roll his car to the bottom of then jumped in mine and started reversing to get a good gap between us (about 50/75 yards so if i needed to launch it forward i could) got him to the bottom of the hill, got him parked on some grass at the side of the road, checked to make sure he was ok, had breakdown cover, phone etc. and we went merrily on my way with the gentlemen very grateful.

It gave me a really good feeling to have helped someone, but what I cant understand is why no other car had stopped, I mean surely people must think what if that was my grandfather (or father but im only 23 :P). I could understand people no offering to help if it was a car full of guys but with an elderly gentlemen in the car himself, hmm maybe I was just brought up weird lol.

Ive now got my 12v light board in the back with “CAUTION ACCIDENT” programmed in for when I next come across something similar (its not the first time). That’s not illegal is it? It displays red letters, which is allowed at the rear of cars so I don’t see there being a problem.

Anyway back to work for me, lunch over.

Most people get in their cars these days and don't give a toss about anyone else until they get out at the other end.  :(

Highly unlikely but perhaps, not unknown.

I know that our skinflints take every piece of hardware out (bar wiring and, sometimes, switches) as they get reused on the next car to come out of the workshop.  Yes, we do our own builds, not subcontracted out elsewhere....   8-)
