Electric cars are the way forward :-X

And how do you charge an electric car if there's no power coming through the socket?  ::)

I think there was a hint of irony in hoody's post  ;) ;)

Indeed, on second reading, I would agree. ;) :-[

Well, yes and no. There is a train of thought that says lots of vehicle batteries connected up to the grid for long periods of time could provide energy storage to allow our unreliable renewables to be slightly less pointless.

Then again, an EV battery is very expensive and a wear item. If I were to allow the grid to give and take from mine at will, I'd want to be rewarded to compensate for the extra cycling it would suffer, and I'd also want to know that it'd be full any time I want to drive it. :-\

All the energy suppliers know that we need to build more capacity, but they are sitting on their hands waiting for the kind of subsidies that the windmill peddlers are getting. The government are starting to cave in, too, as they start to get desperate. Chinese sniffing round Hinckley point with a view to building a new reactor, with a 30 year guarantee on the price per MWH @ 3 x wholesale price IIRC. Chinese reactor.. Hmm. :o Give me a candle any day. :y

You couldn't make it up.

Osborne. The Chinese are going to invest in building our nuclear power stations. Small amount to start with ,big amount later. That leaves us(Britain) free to invest in more schools and hospitals.

If we are all still on the forum in thirty years time it will be very interesting to see how much electricity costs by then!!

In 1956 we open the first nuclear power station where we were world leaders at Calder Hall, no we have to get the Chinese to build them for us, how the world and our place in it has changed.  >:( >:( >:( >:(

The only positive is the deal that the Government did almost 2 years ago on financial services. About 90% of global Chinese currency trading is now done in London.

The biggest problem we have is that the Dim Lems are in charge at the energy department, so it is all renewables, renewables, renewables. The Green fool in charge, that replaced the dishonest fool that went to prison, could apply to the EU for a exception and extension to our keep the old coal fired power stations open for a few more years, but he refuses to do so. This is stupidity and party politics at its worst, where when the lights go out the real causes are Liebour as they committed us to these EU energy policies and Dim Lems who are in charge of current policies, but it will probably cost the Conservatives the most votes as they are seen as being in charge.  >:( >:( >:( >:(

Apparently, blackout this winter are a distinct possibility, but much more likely in the winter of 2014 /15, after that they expect things to ease a bit.

If you want to see what electricity is going to cost in a few years, just look at Germany with their dash for renewals, grid instability, a nuclear shutdown, oh and 21p/kwh, the most expensive in Europe. Make the most of your 12-14p/kwh as we are currently going the German route. The French with their nuclear are paying about 8p/kwh.

To stop German industry rebelling there have been a series of measures so they can buy eclusively non-renewables electricity at a cheaper price and they are also exempt from some energy green taxes. The EU has just started an investigation into what could possibly be an illegal subsidy. If it goes against Germany, it will be good for the Polish economy. One to keep an eye on.
