Living in quite a large 3 bed bungalow with 7 rads. 1) 38" x 24". 2) 31" x 22.5". 3) 28.5" x 28.5" double convector. 4) 18" x 23.5" double convector. 5) 50" x 24" double. 6) 47" x 17". 7) 31" x 24" double, and one enormous one 87.5" x 23" double, all with TRV's set at around 3. Any rough estimation on gas useage per day. Gas is only used for C.H. and hot water. Also average electricity useage, lights and cooking, cooking only about 2 hrs per day. Average KWh consumption per day? Halogen 4 ring hob, Double oven, main one used almost exclusively. Thanks.  :y

The easy answer here is to read your meter, say today @ noon, and then tomorrow @ noon.  :y.

That will give you the electric usage straight off. The gas will be subject to a small calculation - but easy enough to do if you advise the daily gas meter reading.

TV usage will make a big difference as LCD and Plasma can use a lot. Also, lightbulbs - whether low energy or not and how many all add up.

Pop the readings up and lets take it from there .............  :y

TV doesnt use that much, basic rule of thumb is:

Projector: 0.10 watt per square inch
LCD: 0.15 watt per square inch
CRT: 0.20 watt per square inch
Plasma: 0.25 watt per square inch

So a 40inch would typicaly be:

Projector: 86W
LCD: 128W
CRT: 172W
Plasma:  214W

Note also that the LED backlit screens (often wrongly described by manufacturers as LED TV's) use even less power.

In context, that is not much more energy useage per hour than boiling a kettle.

Another reason for looking at your actual metered usage is that an amount of energy will be lost via walls/windows/roof. How much exactly will depend on whether you have loft insulation/cavity wall insulation/double glazing etc.

A bungalow has a larger roof than a normal house - so more scope for heat loss via the roof, etc, etc, etc ........

hmmmm? Main reason for asking is the hike in energy prices. Moving here has been an enormous shock to the system where energy costs are concerned. Moved from a 3 bed house to this 3 bed bungalow. Previous home was paying £97 a month for gas and electric and was £300+ in credit. After first quarter here monthly DD upped to £220 and currently £90+ in debit. I wonder if this will be re-assessed after next quarter? But why I asked, and the shock I got was checking my usage online yesterday. 14th. Dec 2012 - 12th. March 2013 = 90 days. Total gas usage = 15,027 KWh. Total electricity usage = 1,852 KWh. Gas usage = 167 KWh PER DAY ??? April 2013 - July 2013 = 80 days. Electricity = 1,613 KWh total. Gas = 9,209 KWh..= 115 PER DAY ???  :'( :'(

That doesn't add up. I use about 15,000 kWh of gas per year. :o

(Fair sized 4 bedroom detached with 14 radiators. Not heated weekday days, admittedly)

Ok, then you still have a roughly double roof area, as it's a bungalow. When my Dad moved from a bungalow to a house his heating bill reduced significantly. How much insulation do you have in the roof? I've just added another 6" to mine - taking it upto about a foot in total. You might well be eligible for a grant - well worth checking out.

How old is the boiler, is it a condensing boiler?

The electricity usage seems fairly consistent @ just over 20 kwh per day, so it seems that the real issue is the gas usage.

Iirc, you have a lot of GU10 spotlights in the house.
These pull anywhere between 25 and 50 watts so have a look on here and replace them with some of these

Also, is that light still on outside on the side of your house ?
If yes, then that's a minimum of 40 watts on 24/7.

As for the gas ............... turn off the radiators in rooms that don't get used and use draft sealing around the doors.
As said, most of the heat will either escape through the loft or windows.
You should get a grant for the loft considering your circumstances with the missus  ;)
Loft insulation should be a good 2ft deep BUT make sure you make a small hole in the felt where the spotlights are  ;)
