Any recent excursion through standing water might have dislodged the rear sensor... if the sensors are past their best and have some play where the arm attaches to the sensor, then they might send duff messages to the ecu :y

It might. But if dislodged I'm sure you'd have the warning popping up every few minutes, no? My memory is the warning is a persistent bugger, going by the issues I had with a front sensor that kept popping off due to seized ball joints.

It's always worth examination to see that the sensor arm is firmly pressed into its socket and that the ball joints on the little link rods are not rusty and seized.

But I had assumed you'd been down that road already? And are now clutching at straws?

Yes,straws are very much being clutched.

Both sensors have been fully removed, cleaned and fully inspected.Very little play on arm and ball joint sits tight and moves freely, although as car has been sat on driveway for several weeks now I had assumed that the level sensors only came into play when the car was moving so as to keep the headlights level.

I will again remove each arm and see what effect it has on the light position ,as I assume when removed if you then move the arm the light servos should operate and cause both lights to move sligthly
