Cold War, Hot Jets.

Part 1 of 2

How the jet engine gave hope to Britain as the country recovered from World War II.

Must get my mum to watch this . Back in the day when you didnt necessarily need official qualifications to be involved in some interesting areas but you had the right knowledge, her ability in maths meant she was involved in the very male orientated RAE at Farnborough. She worked on the Fairy Delta2 as well as being involved with what was to become the EE Lightning. Obviously it was a job she loved but lack of formal qualifications meant she could never return to anything like that again having left in the late 50s to marry and start a family. Personally,I always preferred the era of jets developed in the 50s and early 60s be they English or American-javelins/buccaneers/hunters/sabres/super sabres/thuds etc......too much time spent on airfix models methinks ;D

Cracking documentary. :y

Did anyone else know about British involvement in the U2 spy saga?

Or that a Labour government sold Rolls Royce engines to the Ruskies "but with the proviso that they could only be used for civilian purposes". They turned up in the Korean War in Migs. ::) ::) ::)

Came as astonishing news to me.  :o :o

Me,too. :-\

I thought it was those in the 1951-55 Churchill administration who were the unspeakable cads.

I really must listen and watch more closely. :-\ :-\

I agree, a great documentary with solid research credentials, and more to come. :y :y :y :y

Although I knew about the Rolls Royce engine saga, I hadn't a clue about the British U2 spy plane involvement.  Obviously one of those acts described as "Highly Top Secret", and apparently still so from a British point of view!  Only an American who was prepared to admit to it, which normally would concern me but, in the context of the politics of the time, and the research involved in this documentary, is believable :) :)

You need to sit down and have a chat with my old man, he used to be an electrical engineer for BAE working on them.  He has some great stories and factoids :y
