Advice needed
« on: 13 November 2013, 20:19:29 »

When we moved into the place we are now and the engineer turned up to turn the gas supply on and check the boiler etc.,he told us that when we turned the central heating on it was better/cheaper to leave it on all the time rather than set it on a timer for acouple of hours a day or whatever. However other advice I've seen being given out on the TV says it's better/cheaper on the timer rather than on all the time,so what's you guys/gals advice on this?I'm confused as this is the first place we've ever had that's got central heating!

A lot depends on when you're in and when you're out. Obviously if the house is empty all day, it's pointless heating it. Plus, do you want it on when you're in bed?
I, personally, use the timer.

Well I'm out all day at work, but most days the dragonlady is at home, but left to her the heating would never go on at all, she'd just sit there huddled in a blanket!

Heating and water on 24hs we simply turn the thermostat down at night and through the day, if it gets bitterly cold the heating will click in, this way the house never gets really cold....... :y :y

Both my water and heating are on 24x7x365, although the room stat does vary temp depending on time of day/year.

My flat has no stat, it's timer is crap too. So is turned on when it's needed, this is the worst thing to do as it takes ages to heat up. At new place it will always be on and controlled via a stat, as it takes a lot less energy to heat up if its already a little warm.

New place has solar panels, so be interesting to see now long they last before we need gas during the course of the day/month.
