Driving home in the dark the traffic slowed several times. It seemed as though a vehicle ahead was in difficulty. After negotiating one roundabout there was a strong acrid smell of burning.

The inside of my car now stinks of burning. I can't tell whether it is a result of something that I was following or whether I have an electrical fault. Everything appears to be working and I can't find any obvious source of smoke. I took the powersounder out last year & haven't fitted the new one yet.......

Any ideas?

Thanks Chris. I did check, they appear to be switched off.

Got nothing to go on at the moment but going to keep an eye on the lighting and ignition switches.

I have paranoia with this. following my cambelt explosion i'm sensitive to any smells of burning and the neighbours think im a reet weirdo when they find me sniffing my car 

ANYHOOO..

the best way ive found to determine whether the smell is from outside other things or is my engine...... stick your face in the scuttle between the bonnet and scuttle.... when you smell there all you can smell is whatever the engines produced and youll know if its your engine

If the cam cover gaskets are leaking you will spell burning oil as oil runs down on to the exhaust manifold(s). On my 2.5 smoke would rise from under the bonnet stopping after a run. It smelled of burning oil. Can you identify the smell?

Yes i can second that after doing 140 miles my eyes were burning with the stench of burnt oil from cc

Been there, got the T shirt. My first Omega used to send smoke signals to me from under the bonnet until I changed the cam cover seals.

It isn't the normal burned oil smell it really does smell like someone let the smoke out

Drove 20 miles each way today and the smell is fading.

Still not confident that the cause isn't somewhere under the dash though

Tried to use the screen wash today, headlight washers worked but nothing on the screen (apart from the overspray from the headlight washers)

Arrived at work & cleaned the filter on the pump, still nothing. Followed the pipe up into the scuttle and it came away in my hand - the end charred and sealed shut 

The wires into the jet heater must have shorted and caused the plastic bits to self combust. No sign of the jet heater, just some bare copper wires and the charred ends of the washer pipes.

Evans Halshaw had a new washer jet in stock just finished fitting it. What was left of the old one popped out without trouble but I am still a little shaken by the thought that it could have caught and turned into a full on car fire
