Auto Transmission

3.2 MV6 Auto 03

Recently found a short delay in engaging gear when accelerating at low speed. More recently a longer delay and then a tooth rattling crunch and almost a bang when it engages and it seems like the box will get wrecked. Now at motorway speed it seems ok, but I'm being very gentle with right foot. But when pulling off and at low speed the jolt is highly likely unless feather light right foot.

Any ideas : Something simple or something major ? Or is it time to dump my Omega ?

First thing to do is check ATF level, following the procedure in the guide to the letter. Worst case scenario, another box is going to cost around £100, so not worth dumping a good car over. ;)

Good advice there from someone who knows.
Be prepared though, it can be quite messy, but checking the level in the first instance is simple  :y

How many miles on the car?

Has the box been serviced at all? (ATF and filter change/clean)

That's the good thing with these cars, good used parts are plentiful and keep viable cars on the road, fuel apart they are cheap barges to run. Hope you sort the box out for little cash.

Well said, also they are so cheap there is no depreciation on them either. So yes a little expensive at the pumps, but cheap otherwise  :)

Well, car is with my garage right now, so we'll see. I don't do my own work and servicing

Mine was a bit clumsy in first gear but only 10 percent of the time. It had recently have a ATF filter and oil change but on inspection I managed to get another 1/2 of litre of ATF in there and haven't had any more trouble.

Mine did exactly that once. Topped up ATF and it has not recurred.

No visible ATF leak, no dipstick so can't check. They gave me the name of an autobox specialist company not far away. Spoke to them, they suggested bring it in for basic checks, but if there is a fault possibly not worth doing, but could be as simple as ATF level.

An auto specialist will want over a grand before they lift a finger on a repair. Don't even go there.

See the guide section for ATF top up. Its a piece of pee to do and costs no more than a litre of oil.

Print that and the ATF change guide off and give the relevant one to your mechanic. If he can't do it, change mechanic Rog. Its a simple level plug, no dip sticks required ::) ;)
