Tensioer pulley
« on: 30 November 2013, 15:18:59 »

Went out to car started fine but an odd noise from under bonnet,a quick look showed what was left of auxiliary drive belt doing its best impression of a reef knot! Also pulley at top left[i.e.drivers side]is not in one piece, the grooved plastic bit is no longer attached to the metal centre! Is the pulley a dealer only part or would Halfords be likely to carry these? Also do they generally carry stocks of the drive belt?Apparently mine is the shorter of the two types that were fitted to these engines[3.0 litre V6]or so I'vebeen told.Basically I really need it done by tomorrow as 1]I need it to visit the dragonlady in hospital[she knows I'm not going tonight but she's got others going to see her so she'll not be left out]and 2]the car was stranded on a public car park but I've managed to get it onto works premises[it was only across the road]and we're not supposed to park our own cars on site-the bosses aren't there while Monday morning so I've sneaked it on!Also assuming I can get the bits what tools will I need to replace the pulley/belt? TIA

Had exactly the same happen to mine just over a week ago. I would be amazed if the pulley was available from Halfords or similar.
Almost certainly dealer only. Belt may be available from factors, not sure tbh.

17 or 19mm spanner/socket and bar is all you need to swap the pulley :y

Any scrappies nearby, pick up a cheapy sh one, regrease it prior to fitting and get a new one ordered on Monday. That way everyone's happy :y chances are that a dealer won't stock it :-\

Just my luck for the pulley to be dealer only!Looks like I'll have to make other arrangements for hospital visiting tomorrow and then get to work early on Monday to shift car off site! Thanks for the replies guys!Nope no breakers yards hereabouts that are open at this time on a Saturday and none that open on a Sunday morning like they used to.

Both my V6s were/are 15mm.

I think the length changed slightly due to variations in the size of the pulley fitted to the alternator.

My Aux belt tensioner pulley seized up, melted then all broke away. RAC man took us to Euro Car Parts and they had one in stock, which I must admit surprised me, :y

Stands to reason that the pulley is a universal part... 2.0/2.3 Frod four pots have a very similar pulley doing the same job :-\
